Leon was on edge. The Boss was visiting this afternoon, and he had strict orders from Kace to keep Lina and himself far away. He had taken an interest in the pair, and that was never a good thing. History had only proved that point. To take the stress off of his shoulders, he had begun to help a handful of children learn how to throw a proper punch. He could sense his little sister perched on top a stack of crates in the corner of the room - a place only she would be able to climb to - laughing at their failures.
"Too weak." She said to herself, dangling her legs in the air.
"Too slow." She giggled, and took a big chunk out of the half rotten apple she had found on the side.
"Too much." She almost choked on her apple as she witnessed a boy throw himself into the air and tumble down from the force of it.
"Alright, good job everyone." Her brother dismissed the hopeless lot. The kids shuffled out of the room, embarrassed and angry and the girl. Just a normal day for Lina.
"Stop showing off." Leon called out, failing to hide his amusement at her cocky nature.
"It's constructive criticism." She declared, jumping down from her tower and landing perfectly.
"It's heckling, and it's not nice. You had to learn too once, y'know." Leon replied.
"Everyone else just learns so much slower. It's boring!" She dragged out her words, throwing her arms out and stepping in circles towards him.
"Well, you're not like-"
"-everyone else, I know!" Her brother caught her in his arms, as she repeated the mantra he had told her every day of her life. He was growing so quickly, she could no longer wrap her arms fully around his waist. "Neither are you. I'm like you. We're the same."
Leon could feel his heart falter. Lina looked up at him with trust flooding her big green eyes. Like he was the only person in the world that mattered. It was enough to make him forget what he really was, even for a moment. "Yeah."
"Being different is the worst!" She groaned, burying her face into his chest. He smelled ashy and earthy, like a forest after it's rained.
"Tell me about it." He hummed.
"At least we're different together." He almost couldn't make out what she said from how muffled her voice was.
