Adam's clasp around the microphone, fists turning a ghostly pale under the pressure. Dozen's upon dozen's of strange faces gazed menacingly at him from the audience.
Man, stand up is hard... Adam thought, There's so many people here, it's almost overwhelming.
Adam has dealt with large crowds of people in the past. After all, he has been to several YouTube panels with immense turn outs. Adam expected taking the stage would he hardly any different however he was badly mistaken, his heart palpitating as he tried to stabilise his hitched breathing. Something about people relying on you and you alone for their source of entertainment for the next however long, and growing more irritated and disappointed with each failed joke, perturbed him.
"Woo!" Eh?
Adam could detect that voice from anywhere, he didn't even have to consider it twice. His eyes quickly scanned the crowd just to land on the all too loveable face of James, his best friend for several years and counting, two or three rows back. Spread from ear to ear was a grin infested with child-like joy. Before, James had brushed him away, testifying he had heaps of work to catch up on. Adam was disappointed, but he understood.
What happened to working? Pondered he, Did he cancel just for me?
Adam's smile matched James'. Sunny and full of life. All his prior worries melting away at the seams.
"You've got this!" James called once more, completely oblivious to the weird stares he was receiving. None of that stuff particularly bothered James, as a matter of fact. He could make a complete fool of himself in public and play it off casually. As far as Adam believed, at least.
Newly profound confidence obtained, Adam took the microphone off it's stand and opened up his comedy act. James was squirming in his seat in anticipation, leg excitedly bouncing up and down.
The crowd buzzed with laughter following one of Adam's jokes, although Adam could swear James was the loudest laugh he heard. Warm and bright, his laughter echoed from every corner of the room. Adam didn't miss the small details of James' face even from such a distance. The things you didn't need to be a scientist wielding a microscope to observe, however many looked past them.
On the account of publicly noticeable details, James shouted words of encouragement and affirmation through thick layers of silence (spare the judgemental murmuring from Karen and Paul the next row over). Whenever his mind was beclouded with thoughts, James snapped him right out of it and boosted his confidence.
"You're doing great!"
"Aww, come on! Don't give up! You're amazing!"
"I believe in you!"
Adam regarded him lovingly. James was trying his absolute hardest to encourage Adam despite the distance. If he could close up that distance, then believe me, he would. He'd provide the closure and encouragement he needed to face the crowd once more. That's why Adam knew he just couldn't give up, not with James trying do hard in his absence!
Being on the stage was difficult, James understood, but it would become less difficult with someone providing supportive action. A personal cheerleader, if you will.
The rest of the show went on without a hitch. Adam even received standing ovation from crowd members alike for his astonishing performance. Paul and Karen didn't, but fuck Paul and Karen. They didn't deserve Adam's time, in that case.
Adam bowed before departing the stage. "Hey!" A familiar voice calls from behind.
James had caught up to him, smiling childishly. Adam's quite the dork himself, maybe that's why he saw it from deep within James. "What're you doing here?" Adam asked and James shrugged.
"Uh, I don't know, TO SUPPORT YOU?" James answered, his hands flapping in an animated manner to convey his point.
"You told me you had to do work! You didn't have to come here!" Adam quickly responded as his gaze averted to his feet. James paid no mind.
"Welp, I'm behind anyway." James hummed absentmindedly, much to Adam's annoyance. His eyebrows furrowed.
"That's not a good thing. Your fans are going to go nuts at you if you don't complete your video in time?" Exclaimed Adam. James frowned observing him and pondered, is he mad at me? "I'm really grateful that you came, James, really, but-"
"-Nah." James cut him off abruptly. "Who cares about that? If I want to support my friends, then I'm sure as hell going to do it! They don't call me James Friend Supporter Rallison for nothing!"
Adam blinked. "Jameson, nobody calls you that."
James faked a scoff in offence. "Well they will now! Because from now on, I promise to support you no matter what it takes! You got it?"
Adam's eyes gleamed. He suppressed the urge to act in a way out of character for his standards: embracing James in a hug. Adam kept his arms glued to his side as a watery smile trembled at the edge of his lips. "Thank you, James. For what you did. You got quite a few weird looks yelling out from the crowd."
"Hey- it took the attention off of you when you needed to regroup!" James said in pride, when in actuality that wasn't what had gone through his head whatsoever. He hardly even acknowledged the people sitting either side of him on his crowd row. Adam appreciated the sentient behind his action, supporting the comedian through and through. Even during those times he thought he just couldn't do it.
"I know, I know. Thanks anyways, James."
"You know, I expect to be repaid for this." In the matter of a minute, Adam's expression broke. He looked over at James, his hands sassily placed on his hips and his lips pursed, "I embarrassed my butt off for you! When you become a famous comedian world wide, then you better not forget me!"
Adam knew he was poking fun at him. Embarrassment hardly existed to James in most cases. However, Adam countered. "Who said I wasn't brining you along on my journey? How do you expect me to make it far without your kind words?"
"Touché." James hummed cynically, "Well then, pay tributes to me in your interviews!"
"Sure. On one condition." Adam smirked, "I get to call you my personal cheerleader."
"Oh my god, that is so corny." James stifled a laugh into his hand. "You've got yourself a deal. Personal cheerleader at your service!"
In that moment, then and there, he realised just how far James was willing to go to support Adam and his foreseeable dreams. James wouldn't tell a lie, not in this circumstance. Perhaps he did live up to that cocky nickname.
