After a long day of work, I'm cleaning up the last table when Jason walks in.
"Come on Macy," he says.
"Why?" I ask.
"Surprise." He smiles.
I look at the manager, silently asking if it's ok to leave. She nods.
"Ok," I say.
We walk out to his car to go to this mysterious location.
"Will you please tell me where we're going?" I ask.
"Nope," he says, popping the p.
I sigh. "What about a clue?"
He takes a moment to think. "You got a swimsuit at home?"
"Yeah......"
He turns onto my street. We pull into my driveway.
"I'll go get my swimsuit," I say.
"I'll go too," he insists.
"Ok." We walk into my house and thankfully, it doesn't smell like alcohol.
My mom isn't home right now, so I change into my swimsuit quickly and put shorts and a sheer shirt over it, since the scrapes are mostly faded.
After a little while, Jason pulls onto the road that leads to the woods.
"Why are we going to the woods?" I ask him. "With our swimsuits?"
"You'll see," he says for, like, the 100th time.
He stops the car in front of the woods. We get out and start walking.
"It's just a little further up here," he tells me. If I knew we'd be walking in the woods, I wouldn't have worn my flip flops.
We walk for a few minutes until we cross into a clearing with a small lake surrounded by more trees. The sunlight on the lake makes it look like it's shining.
"I found this place when my family was looking for a house," he says. "I just love how peaceful the woods are, so I was walking around and eventually I found this."
"Wow," I manage. "That's amazing."
Jason walks over near the lake. "Well?" He looks looks back at me. "Aren't you coming?"
I smile and walk over to him. I take my shorts and my shirt off and set it to the side. We walk over to the water, but Jason stops me.
"I've got a more fun way to get in," he tells me.
I follow him to a tall tree overlooking the lake. He starts climbing up. I follow him.
He stops at a long branch and climbs across it. He stops at the edge.
He looks back at me and smiles. He slowly stands up, then jumps into the water.
I wait for him to come back up, which takes a few seconds. When he swims back up, he yells "Come on!"
I smile and shake as I move slowly to the edge of the branch. I stand up slowly with my arms spread out. I almost slip off, but I catch myself.
"You ok?" Jason asks me.
"Yeah," I yell back.
I start to stand up again, this time more careful. Eventually, I'm fully standing. I take a moment to regain my balance.
I jump off the branch and land in the cold water. My hair gets all over my face when I swim back up to the surface.
"That was really fun," I tell Jason.
"Yeah, it was," he says. "I actually haven't done that yet. I just saw the branch today, and I thought it would be interesting."
I laugh. We talk and swim for a while and every once in a while, we jump off the tree again.
After a couple of hours, we get out and dry off. The sun is beginning to set. We lay out the towels next to each other and sit down on them.
"So," Jason says.
"So," I respond.
"When's your birthday?" he asks.
"Um, August 2nd. I barely made the mark to have graduated this year," I tell him. "What about you?"
"Mine is March 18th," he says.
"Cool," I say. "When are you planning to leave for college?"
"I'm not certain, but I'm planning on driving to campus around August 10th," he replies.
"I was planning to leave around then too."
We talk like this for a while, switching off who asks the next question. I find out his favorite color is green and he moved here from Kansas City.
"You know, Macy," Jason says. "When I kissed you after the party when you drove me home....."
I thought he forgot about that since he was drunk...
"...that wasn't me being all loopy from the drinks I had."
I sit there for a moment, letting that sink in. "What do you mean?" I ask.
He leans over on one arm. "I meant to kiss you," he responds.
I look down and smile because I don't know what else to do. Gosh I've been smiling a lot today. I don't know what's really happening at this moment. It all feels like a dream.
I look back at him. He looks back at me. I don't know what I'm doing, but I lean in and kiss him.
He kisses me back. We just sit there still before he slips his hand into my damp hair, wrapping his hand in it. He places his other hand on the small of my back, moving me closer. My hands wrap around his neck, still a bit cold from the water.
After a few seconds, Jason pulls away and rests his forehead on mine. Our breaths mix as neither of us move our hands.
Jason's the first to speak. "We probably need to go," he whispers. "It's getting dark." I simply nod in agreement, but neither of us move.
After a minute, Jason's hand slips out of my hair as mine loosen around his neck. We accept the sad truth in silence that we have to leave and get up to begin packing our things. I feel Jason's eyes glance over at me several times with a smile on his face, putting one on mine as well.
A few minutes later, we're packed up and heading back to the car to go home.
