By the end of tryouts, I had scored the winning goal in the scrimmage and I was covered in sweat.
"Alright girls, that'll be it, but please come over here before you leave!" coach says. Everyone quickly grabs a water and jogs over to where she's waiting.
"I just want to say thank you for coming out and I have for sure seen new talent that I've never seen before and I'm excited for this season. An email will be sent out to each of you saying if you made the team or not. All emails should be sent out within two weeks at most. Other than that, I think we're done."
We all mumble various ways to say thanks and head back to our cars. I'm on the way to my car when someone stops me.
"Hey."
I turn around and face the sophomore I was paired with at the beginning of tryouts. "Hi."
"I just wanted to say good job today," she says. "If coach doesn't put you on the team, then I don't know what's wrong with her."
I smile. "Thanks."
She smiles and walks away. I suddenly feel very happy and I get in my car. I check my phone and see I have 7 texts and 3 missed calls from Jason. I click his number and it starts to ring.
"Macy!" he answers after the 3rd ring. "How was tryouts?"
"I thought I would be nothing compared to those girls, but I did really good!"
He cheers on the other line. "That's great! So when do you find out?"
"I don't know, she said two weeks at most."
"Well, I'm going to be restless until I find out. I am so happy you did good! I wish I could have seen it!"
"Yeah, me too," I say.
"So when do you get home?" he asks.
"I don't know, I just got in my car." I look at the dashboard and it's almost 7:30. "Woah, and it's almost seven thirty."
"Yeah." He sounds slightly disappointed.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
"Nothing."
I know this is the most I'll get out of him now, so I drop the topic.
"I'm heading out on the freeway, so I probably need to let you go..."
"Yeah," he says. "Um, bye."
"Bye."
I close my phone and turn the radio up and continue to drive home.

The next day, I have to go back to work. When I get there, Tanner's already there with his apron and he's on his phone. He's doing something unusual...
He's smiling.
I shut the door quietly and walk around him to get my apron. He's still smiling and still doesn't seem to know I'm here yet. His back is to me. I stop and get a crazy idea.
I slowly walk over to him and stand on my tiptoes to peek over his shoulder at his phone. I know it's rude, but he's never this happy.
When I get high enough to see at least who he's texting, my jaw drops.
He's texting a boy......
I edge a little higher to see the conversation, but it's just a bunch of emojis. A weird assortment of emojis.
I say a long "Awwwwwwww" in my head before slowly backing up. Wait....
Tanner's gay......?
Quit making assumptions Macy!
