He enters his childhood home and immediately feels better.  His mom is cooking. He can smell her famous chicken soup as soon as comes in. “Son, what is it?” His dad greets him. “Something to do with your gift?”

“Yes dad.” His mom exits the kitchen and immediately wraps her arms around him. She meets his chest now but,  it feels the same as when he meet hers. Mom’s arms mean safety.

“What has you disturbed?” she asks.

“Let’s sit down Sarah and let him tell us.” She releases him and they sit. They wait as he gathers his thoughts.

“His name is Hank. His sister was Dena. He called me..” He goes to tell them the rest, up to Hank’s last question.

“Son,” David starts after a moment or two of stunned silence, “you were sent to save the boy. Why you weren’t to save his sister, God alone knows and it is His business. Yours is to do what he gifted you to do.”

“I try to accept that dad, I do but…”

“The nature of evil, why these things happen, is beyond our understanding,” his mom says, shaking her head sadly, “It is something we won’t understand here on earth.”

“Yeah, it just seems like if I would have..”

“Your not feeling guilty, are you Saul?”

“Of course dad.”

“This has never happened before, right?” Saul shakes his head. “He might have been meant to die too and you to witness, like usual. Your calling out, a perfectly human thing to do, was received by Hank and his.. the killer, because they both must have a bit of extrasensory perception. Dena must not have had.  Because they do, you were able to save Hank”

“Wow dad, I hadn’t thought of that.”

“So don’t feel guilty. Maybe over time you can save others the same way.”  His mom adds. “Now, come and have some soup. You are much to skinny.” They follow her with a grin they share. Saul feels better.
