<<Chapter 1: Classifying Crushes>>
Crushes are weird. I remember awhile back when I had a huge crush on this one boy, Finn... I'm using the term "crush" pretty loosely here - to be honest, I was practically obsessed with the kid. He was smart, I guess, but I kind of overlooked the fact that he was a total asshole at the time.
Sometimes I think back and wonder... how would middle school have changed for me if I hadn't spent so much time wondering if he'd ever like me back?

I turn to my right and see Caroline giggling at something on her iPhone.
"Finn, again?" I smile lightly, but it wouldn't take a genius to notice that it's was about as fake as our friendship.
"Yeah, well, he wasn't sure what the math homework was." She smiles innocently, tucking a strand of wavy, pale blonde hair behind her ear. I just kind of looked at her, mouth gaping.
"You're not even in the same math...." I raise an eyebrow questioningly, watching as Caroline places yet another sparkly pink headband in her hair. She giggles for a moment, as if in another world entirely.
"Um, Hello?" I reach over and waved a hand in front of her face. Well, what do you know? That seemed to do the trick.
"Oh, did I say math? I meant science." She looks up at me with her big blue eyes for only a moment before gluing her face back down to her phone, typing away furiously.
Once again... They're not in the same science. I would know, since AP Chemistry is the only class that I have with Finn.... Caroline isn't in AP Chemistry. Needless to say, she isn't the smartest little fish in the sea that we call middle school.
What does Finn even see in her? She's pretty, sure, in the face maybe. She has big blue eyes, a cute little nose, and perfect golden-blonde waves. Meanwhile, here I am with my poop-brown eyes and chopped off brown hair. I know I'm not hideous, sure, but I definitely can't compare with Caroline. Her face is perfect... except maybe her forehead. It's gigantic. I mean, not anything that bangs couldn't cover up, though. She has braces, sure, but she's mentioned that they're coming off soon.
I mean, she's got that "innocent little school girl" act down... so there's that, I guess.
I sigh and shake my head as I close my locker, still lost in thought. I'm the last one left alone in the hallway, per usual, since Caroline scampered off maybe a minute ago. Probably running of to Finn, but who knows.
I twist the combination lock on my locker a few times and tug on it to make sure it's secure, then slowly make my way over to the area outside of our seminar room, where most of our grade just gathers.
I spot Finn chatting with my main group of friends, and I join the rest of them and sit down, flipping through my math binder in a pitiful attempt study for the finals coming up. I'm about open my mouth to ask Finn a math-related question when Caroline cuts me off, tugging on his shirt playfully to direct his attention towards her and beginning to flirt shamelessly.
You know what the worst part about all of it is, though? Caroline acts so innocent, to the point where she claims to not even know what flirting is. I mean, we're in 8th grade... Does she honestly expect anyone to believe that she doesn't know what flirting is? Grow the fuck up, honey.
I mutter a string of colorful words under my breath before turning my attention to Natalia next to me. She and I met in the 5th grade, and have been the best of friends ever since.
"So... Thought of any new creative ways to murder Modest! Management?" I ask her. She's been gunning for the company ever since they supposedly pressured a member of her favorite band, One Direction, to the point where he quit the band.
"Yes, actually! Do you think I'd go to jail if I threw water balloons at them that were 'accidentally' filled with nails instead of water?" Natalia looks up from her iPhone and grins with pride at her idea.
"The water balloon itself would pop long before you got the chance to throw it at them, sweetie," I pat her head reassuringly in a joking way and she slaps my hand away with an evil glare.
"Don't touch my hair, bitch," she snarls before returning to Tumblr on her phone and chuckling under her breath.
"Oh well..." Natalia sighs and looks off dramatically into the distance, "there's always my mother's new set of kitchen knives." She grins maliciously and I chuckle, shaking my head as she looks back down at her phone. I can see her scrolling through her Tumblr feed as she typically does during our lunch period.
Well that's my crazy, curly-haired Latina friend for you.
"For the record, other than Netflix, my calendar is open for business this weekend." Natalia winks as she finally sets her phone down and I glance to my right quickly, noticing that Finn and Caroline have gone off somewhere together. Figures.
"Want to hit the mall? I need to buy a gift for my cousin." I suggest, mind elsewhere as I clench my jaw slightly in annoyance. I bet they went to the library to "study", or whatever the hell they do there. Whatever it is, though, I can assure you that it's definitely NOT studying.
"As long as we stop by Victoria's Secret," Natalia gives me an anticipating look as she awaits my response.
"Deal." I respond, shutting my math binder. There's no point in studying if my mind is going to be preoccupied, anyways.
Natalia returns to her phone for a moment, looking up about a minute later and glancing around with a puzzled look on her face. "Hey, where'd Finn and Caroline go?"
