No matter how impossible, unattainable, or unimaginable something may seem ... if it's meant to be, it will be.
Colin was born with many invisible eyes watching. Despite her disbelief of any kind of supernatural existence, mum felt the presence of those eyes. She did have an openness, a willingness to believe that there are just some things out there that cannot be easily explained, though an opinion was always only an opinion and not anything decidedly factual. So, why didn't she believe him, or why wasn't she open to potentially believe him when he was getting older?
Perhaps she did believe him and more too, perhaps she feared for him, herself sensing a danger he may have to face. Hence, she must have known he saw things; she must have known that he sensed many things just as she had once sensed many eyes. Mothers will be mothers, this one choosing not to accept truth allowed for a certain denial. Maybe admitting certain things allows for the possibility that things could go quite badly, if they weren't doing so already.
Could she have known how it would consume his time in this world, and perhaps the next one too? Could she have known that what went unseen would come one day and take her son out of this world? Denying acceptance does not mean it will never occur. Ignorance is bliss and all ... if that is what it was.
Perhaps there was a necessity. A necessity of preparation, a set-up which would allow a child grow and become the man he needed to be. Perhaps she saw the darkness coming, perhaps she saw a way to create a force strong enough to take on that darkness.
All his young life he had visions and for the longest time he knew not of what they meant. He appeared to see things no one else could. Rarely did he speak of these things and what he did speak of only fed to set up counselling sessions in which ultimately was the cause of his mother's death ... well that and the visions, Colin was having. And he hated his gift for that very reason.
Sixteen and an only child with a father somewhere in the world he knew not where, Colin was taken into care for a year and a half until he turned eighteen when the spirit of a similarly aged girl convinced him to make the choice to go out into the world for himself. She influenced the choice for Colin to remain quiet about what he sees, and he only ever spoke out about it when the need to do so got in the way.
It was in his thirties when his mindset altered, actually it began a little before that, he was twenty-eight when a young lady named Amy came his way. He decided to use his gift instead of seeing it as a curse. He had indeed used it positively before this point but still, it got in the way more often than not.
Colin has a gift, a gift that sometimes can be as much a curse as it is a gift. He can see and talk to spirits. The one thing that these spirits tend to have in common is that they need or want help in order to move on, even at times they may not be aware of such themselves. And more often than not, they were spirits of people he did not know, they were ... strangers.
They weren't always strangers of course, there had been his grandfather on the day of his funeral, AJ too ... the best friend he ever had and they only person who ever truly understood him in any way ... there also had been vision of his mum, long after she had passed. All kinds come to Colin whether he wants to help them or not. He never once considered that there might be an ultimate reason for all of it.
Upon the legal reclamation of his life at eighteen, he had been found accommodation in or around a town he once lived in when mum was alive, they place she had been buried within and it was closer to when he turned twenty-three when he decided to move away. There had been a time within these years when he met a very special lady and spent an entire summer with her. Perhaps something more ... permanent ... was never in the cards. If it's meant to be and all of ... that.
