PRELUDE

Even in the shadows there is light, light so held in position that it is weighed down by the forces of destiny.

In the silent hours before dawn, when the world holds its breath between dreams and waking, Darkness gathers in the far reaches of the land. It is not the gentle shroud of night, but an ancient force, restless and coiling, whispering promises of oblivion and eternity to all who would listen, and to one who in particular who is open to hearing.

Rumours ripple through the valleys and over the mountain crests: an army is assembling, forged from the heart of shadow, its warriors bred not of flesh and bone but of fear and desire, marching towards light, intent on invasion. Soon, beneath banners inked with secrets and regrets, they will march right the way trough.

Opposite them, where Light still reigns, the world quivers with anticipation and dread. The citadels glow with lanterns through the night, not for celebration, but to stave off the encroaching dark. Those who dwell in Light ... for the most part ... sense the coming of an age-defining conflict, a battle not merely of armies, but of hope against despair, of memory against forgetfulness.

Here too, there will be one who is not quite chosen but special in his own unique way. He teeters on acceptance, not aware of what that acceptance may entail. Life experience goes a long way in any kind of determination. Whichever way the choice goes, he will not be alone.

Will Light be ready? That is the question that haunts the dreams of all, from the highest sovereign to the youngest child. Preparation hums in the streets and in the halls of power. Armouries are thrown open, ancient scrolls are dusted off, and the wise gather to plot and to pray. Yet for all their readiness, uncertainty lingers ... because Light, for all its clarity, can be fragile.

Too many times, down through the halls of history has the world seen brightness snuffed out by complacency, by the slow creeping certainty that 'it cannot happen here.' ... especially with he who thinks such. And so, as the drums of Darkness sound beneath the horizon, marching ever closer. Some believe that Light will stand firm, while others tremble, fearing that its shine will falter.

Yeah, amid this tremulous dawn, a single figure walks the boundary where brightness fades into shadow. He is not a king, nor a general ... at least, not in the sense of golden crowns or ironclad commands. He wears no sigil on his chest, unlike a foe who will one day come, bears no birthright to rally the masses. And yet, whispers follow him wherever he treads: he is the one who may tip the scales.

Who is he? Some say he is descended from heroes, though the lines between myth and memory are blurred. Others claim that he bears a curse, that fate itself has marked him for suffering and for greatness. To some, he is a relic of the past, to others, a beacon for the future. Yet none can say, with certainty, if he can save them ... or if, perhaps, he is doomed to fail.

Isn't it darkest, right before dawn?

He walks alone, or so it seems. Solitude is etched on his brow as surely as starlight is etched on the black sky. Trust, for him, is a brittle thing, worn thin by betrayal and the weight of expectation. For in every crowd, in every whispered word, he feels the eyes of destiny upon him, measuring his worth being unsure as to why this is so.

Loneliness is not of absence, as he may think it is, but of isolation: the knowledge that, for all the allies who may gather, only he can walk the path fate has drawn for him. But can one who is so watched, so burdened, ever truly be alone?

There are moments ... brief, flickering as candle flames ... when he thinks perhaps ... he is just that ... alone. In the hush of the forest at midnight, when even the birds hold their breath, when he feels the cool touch of night dew on his fingers, he almost believes the world has left him behind.

In those almost desperate moments, fear gnaws at him. Not the fear of falling to Darkness, but the fear that he has become nothing more than a vessel for other people's hopes ... a shadow himself, in a war of Light and Dark.

Yet, as the first rays of morning begin to pierce the horizon, he remembers. He recalls the voices of those who stood beside him: a mentor who taught him to see not only the world's wounds, but its wonders; a friend who refused to yield when failure seemed certain; a stranger whose selfless act, small and unnoticed, changed the course of a battle. They are with him, as real as the blood in his veins, as enduring as the scars on his hands.

For he is not truly alone. No one who carries the longing for Light in their heart can ever be. Even in silence, even when surrounded by uncertainty, he finds strength in the memory and presence of others. For the fight against Darkness is never a solitary struggle; Light is born not from a single spark, but from countless souls choosing, again and again, to resist the night.

As the day approaches and the armies gather, the man stands at the forefront of Light's defense. He knows that victory will not be won by might alone. It will require courage, yes ... but also compassion, wisdom, and the willingness to trust. The day may come when his body fails, when his resolve wavers, but still, he will not be alone. Around him, another steps up and others rise, inspired by his defiance, by his refusal to yield to despair.

Indeed, the army of Darkness marches, relentless and unyielding, but the defenders of Light stand ready ... not because they are unafraid, but because they have chosen, in the face of fear, to hope. The battle has not yet begun, even in the face of an ever-present war; the outcome is uncertain.

But in the heart of one solitary man, and in the hearts of those who gather with him, the ancient truth flickers: so long as even one soul remembers the dawn, Darkness can never claim the world entirely.

And so, the question remains: will Light be ready? Perhaps. Perhaps not. To be ready, one must believe in the need to be ready or at least become aware of the evil which is to come. But as long as there is someone willing to stand at the edge of shadow, to bear the weight of solitude and still reach for connection, there is hope. And sometimes, ... hope is enough.
