14. THE MARCH CONTINUES

If I were meant to be controlled, then I would have come with a remote ... this sounds very much like something a certain police detective would say if he had an idea of what is about to come his way.

One becomes three, three becomes five, five becomes seven ... this increases exponentially, standing next to one another at equal increments. One row becomes three, three rows become five, five rows become seven and this too increases exponentially, standing at equal increments row to row. They move at a marching pace, military like. It has been coming for a while, soon it will be here.

Seven nights have passed since detective Keith Mulch visited an old derelict prison, a prison which closed down when a bloodbath occurred moments after it saw its last official execution take place. Craig Hawkins, a deadly murderer in the living world, became all the more deadly in the afterlife. He had known this would be so and had relished the thoughts of what was to come.

It is quite possible that on that day Mulch came to visit the no longer in use prison, the soul of Craig Hawkins made a new home for itself, a home within the body of Detective Mulch. Perhaps something of the likes had previously occurred, possibly at the time when Mulch had no choice other than to end the life of a good guy, a guy who never asked for any of what he got in life.

Perhaps such a thing happened during an interview session with that good guy for Hawkins definitely got to Colin first. Perhaps, entry into the sub-conscious of two men had occurred somewhat simultaneously. Laying quiet, a temporarily dormant Hawkins, if he is somewhere inside Mulch, will wait before once again going on a murderous violent spree of destruction. And Mulch has no idea of what lays ahead of him.

If Hawkins is the defecto general of a marching army of darkness, then Colin had been the last line of defense for the light whether he knew this or not, Mulch may have unwillingly inherited what had been lost with the death of one who had quite an exceptional ability, an ability that oddly still exists.

Mulch had gone to that no longer in use prison with the intention of finding the remains of Craig Hawkins, and with the hopes that if those remains could be found then he, Mulch himself, could destroy those remains, taking away any hold that Hawkins may still have in this world. This is something that did not happen because it is quite possible that in the moment Mulch stood in the prison courtyard, the soul of Craig Hawkins stepped forwards thus ensuring Mulch would leave without achieving what he had come to do.

Had there been a horse in the prison grounds at all that day? The cases of three men killed in separate incidences, all meeting their demise being trampled by an unknown horse, or horses, still remain open despite having gone somewhat ... cold.

Now those seven nights after the prison visit Keith Mulch, a restless Keith Mulch, got up out of his bed, made his way out of his bedroom, then moved across the hallway into the upstairs bathroom where he would stand and confront the large wall mounted bathroom mirror.

Confront? It was in this mirror on at least a couple of occasions prior to this, that Mulch was sure that he caught split-second glimpses of a reflection staring back at him, a reflection of course which was not his own ... rather it was that of Colin or rather split-second visions of Colin mixed into and replacing Mulch's own reflection.

Seeing such a thing ever so briefly could be put down to stress or grief or self-blame. No matter the circumstances, it is because of Mulch that Colin is no longer living, no matter if the option had been taken from him.

The choice had indeed been taken away; Keith could only do one thing at the time he shot Colin in the head. That one thing was to shoot Colin. He could have shot Colin anywhere else other than the head and if he had then Colin may still be alive today but who knows what may have happened if Colin had not been taken out when he had.
