"Damnnit, I knew I made a wrong turn..." you hissed under your breath, [E/C] eyes in search for a place marker to know where you were. You had arrived in one of the few dry areas of the city though by accident as you were actually supposed to be in a different area. Instead of being greeted by the sight of temporary shelters set up by the Red Cross and National Guard to aid Gotham's citizenry, you found yourself driving past towers of brick and concrete. Navigation was slow as you continue to drive in the dark as you sought to find an exit within the maze of the city.
Your radio ran silently as it was shut off not far long ago your windows opened just a crack as you anticipated for the sound of nightlife to accompany you in your journey. Surprisingly it was quiet as you drove by.
Too quiet for your liking.
A huff of exasperation escaped from your lips, feeling frustrated in having lost your way in the area you drove into. Your phone was useless in this situation as there wasn't any signal in hopes of finding a map on the web. So here you were sitting in your car idle with the engine still running. "Just my luck..." you groaned in frustration before reaching over to pull the gearshift into park as you shut off the vehicle. 'No use in wasting gas...' you reasoned as you leaned back against the driver's seat, your keys hanging in the ignition of the car.
You debated in what to do from there.
If you left your car there was a chance that you would become even more misplaced than you already were. Or you would get mugged even though you could handle yourself if that happened by chance. But there was also the prospect that in your absence your car would be broken into leaving your identity exposed and your work lost in the wind. There were many possibilities that could occur in this city whether you chose to leave your car or not.
Such as the scream you heard not too far from where you parked.
"What the hell?..!" you couldn't help but say in alarm, your body having jolt in your seat by startlement of the sudden sound. Seconds later after letting your initial surprise subside, you could feel your instincts take over as you switched the car back on, hurriedly peeling out as you drove in search of where the scream originated from.
You knew better in deciding to ignore it, after all this was Gotham. Still, you didn't think you would become involved in something this fast.
As you drove past several backstreets, you listened carefully in hopes of hearing something that would lead you in the right direction from where the scream came. The sound of mocking laughter as you nearly drove by another alley seemed to answer your thoughts.
Trying to not make much noise, the car came to a stop before being put in park and shut off once more. Carefully you clambered out of the vehicle, closing the door softly behind you. You didn't want to risk drawing attention to yourself by slamming the door so you stressed in making sure you were silent as you could be even leaving the car unlocked by not pressing the button to lock it knowing how loud it resonated when locked.
A wail had sounded as you crept into the shadows of the building you parked your car in front of, having the feeling that you were in the right place in your search for the scream from earlier. Your back pressed against the exposed brick as you silently moved closer to the edge of the building.
"We told you what would happen if you didn't have the money." you heard a man's gruff voice as you stepped near the edge. "Pl-please! Give me more time! I'll have the money, I swear!" came the shrill voice of a woman, her voice evident that she was crying. "Time waits for no one." came the man's voice once again though much closer now as your figure was now at the corner of the building.
