My hand was now gripping the refrigerator door handle. My heart felt like a jackhammer, stomach in knots. I looked at my grandma's door and it was closed and the light was off. I was on my own. I went to grab my phone out of my pocket to call Liam; that's when I realized my pajama shorts didn't have pockets and I didn't have my phone.
I walked behind the island and open a drawer that contained the utensils. I grabbed a knife, hiding it behind my back. I started to walk to the glass door, I was almost halfway there and I saw the man slide the door open. Grammy why didn't you lock the door!
I picked up my pace and that's when I realized it was Liam. "Jesus, you scared the hell out of me!" I quietly yelled. His face was confused, he turned around to look at the door. He looked back to me and had a big smile on his face. "I was wondering why you were staring at me like I was covered in blood." He said laughing. I rolled my eyes removing the knife from behind my back.
Liam's eyes widened putting his hands up in surrender. "Whoa, I was just playing! I didn't mean to scare you." He exclaimed. I rolled my eyes while walking back to the kitchen, Liam trailing behind. I placed the knife back into the drawer while Liam took a seat on the other side of the island. I walked over to the refrigerator and pulled out a pitcher of tea, I set it down, grabbing two glass cups. I set a cup full of tea in front of Liam.
I looked at Liam since he wasn't talking, he was looking around my house, forgetting all about me. He always had this welcoming atmosphere, he was always happy: content. "So, what can I do for you?" I asked snapping Liam attention to me. He adjusted himself in the chair before speaking. "I just wanted to check on you. I didn't see you in speech class-, by the way we have speech together." He added quickly. "So, I thought something happened." He added with a friendly smile.
I smiled back before replying, "I fell asleep in the library after lunch. The librarian woke me up before the dismissal bell." He nodded his head and opened his mouth, but his phone went off. He reached into his pocket and said "Hello?" into the phone. His face was thoughtful as he listened to the person on the other end of the line.
"Alright...okay I'm coming back now." He said before hanging up and putting his phone back into his pocket. "I have to get going. My mom needs help with something." He told me. I looked up at the clock checking the time. What could his mom possible need help with at this time of night? He followed my gaze to the clocked and smiled "Don't ask." He said, standing from the chair and pushing it in.
That night I laid in my bed staring up at the ceiling fan. I hadn't turned it on, but I wish I had. It was hot in my room. I kicked the blanket off of me. I turned to my side, I saw my phone sitting on my nightstand and I thought of the phone call I had with my dad, Saturday I will meet him. Finally, I will see what he is like. Finally, I'll see him face to face, finally.
The next day at school sucked. I forgot my headphones and I heard everyone complaining about everything, from their nail polish to their hair. If you don't like the way your hair looks then throw it in a ponytail. I walked into the library hoping to find peace. I sat in the spot I did the day before. I pulled my book out and started reading. I was almost done with one of the short story when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked up and saw a girl; she had her short brown hair in a tight ponytail. The way she held herself reminds me of a butterfly. They look soft and kind. When I looked in her eyes I saw sadness, It looked like a permanent sadness, one that can't be washed away easily.
"Hi I'm Germany, I just wanted to welcome you to Jefferson High. Where the people are snobs and the food is as bad as the prison's." I laughed at her statement, I'm pretty sure she is right. "Thank you for the warm welcome." I said smiling at her, standing up. "What book are you reading?" Germany asked. When I showed her the cover of my Edgar Allan Poe book she didn't make a face. "Some morbid stuff, but I prefer Sylvia Plath myself." She said with dry humor.
