"Amen," we all said together.
I looked over at my grandma as she was already talking with Ms. Rosenfeld. I turned to Germany and Kara they were looking at me expectantly.
"What?" I asked
"Nothing, let's go to 'Betty's' after we leave." Kara said as she stood up, Germany following suit. I stood to my feet and we started for the door.
"Yeah sure. I'll meet y'all there. I'm just going to take my grandma home." I said. They nodded and left. I made my way to my Grammy's side as she finished talking with her church friends.
"Scarlett, I remember when you were this small. You use to hide behind your grandma's leg." My grandma's friend, Richard, I think was his name said.
I nodded, when my Grammy spoke, "My little shadow, she is all grown up now." She wrapped her frail arm around my shoulders. "We better get going."
"I'll go get the car," I said as I walked down the aisle. I kept my gaze on the ground as I thought of the many times I came here as a child. I smiled at the memory of hiding behind my Grammy's leg.
"Hey," I looked up and saw Nick, leaning on the doorframe.
"Hey, what are you stilling doing here?" I asked, looking up at him.
"I was waiting for you. I wanted to ask you something."
"And what is that?" I smiled at him.
"I was wondering if you wanted to get something to eat with me?" He asked as she scratched the back of his neck. He wore a shy smile, it was heartwarming to see.
"I would love too," I didn't get to finish.
"See I told you kid, she wouldn't say no." Mr. Phillips said as he walked by and patted Nick's shoulder. Nick looked down at his shoes in embarrassment. I watched Mr. Phillips walk out of the church to his car.
"Nick I would love too, but I already made plans with Germany and Kara." I said in a soft tone. Nick's head shot up.
"Yeah, I totally understand. Maybe another time." He said quickly before giving me a quick smile before leaving. I took a deep breath and l let it out slowly. I looked back at my Grammy and she looked at me with a quirked eyebrow. I shook my head and walked to the car.
I walked to the car when I heard a loud sound of an engine. I looked up quickly, knowing it was Nick. What I saw was short of heart break. On the back of Nick's bike was Paige. Her arms were wrapped around him, tight. Paige's head laid on his back with a small smile playing on her face.
My heart ached for a guy that a barely know. I felt my eyes sting as they disappeared behind the trees. I walked the rest of the way to the car. When I felt my phone buzz. As I opened the car door and sat inside I looked at my phone. I had a text message from my mom.
It read, "Missing you!" With a picture of my mom, Charlette, and Dale. I smiled at it before texting back. "Miss y'all too."
I starting the car and picking my Grammy up at the front of the church. She waved bye to all her friends before getting in the car. When we pulled out of the parking lot she spoke up.
"What happened?"
I shook my head, glancing at her and giving her a smile.
As I focused on the road again she spoke up. "Scarlett, you are too strong for your own good. God gave you family for a reason. You shouldn't bottle it up inside of you. Let it out. You don't have to tell me now. You can tell me when you are ready."
