The rest of the week came and went. Nothing major happened after the whole Nick and Paige thing. I shoved my feelings for Nick aside. I didn't want them to get in the way of mine and Paige's friendship. Paige and I sat next to each other in art. We joked around about everything, but I accepted the fact that we wouldn't be as close as we use to be.
As the week progressed I found myself hanging out with Germany and Kara a lot. They were very amusing and witty; I've never met anyone like them. I also found myself avoiding Nick for the rest of the week. When free period came around I would just stay in the library. I didn't need any drama.
Right now I was sitting on the back porch with Liam, working on our speeches. "Why are you doing yours on Martin Luther King," I questioned, "It's so typical." It was true, there was like three other people doing MLK. "I've told you already." He said while writing something down in his notebook. I nodded, he did tell me. He knew it was a common topic, but he wanted his speech to be the best, I'm not afraid of a challenge. He told me.
I nodded; I still didn't know who I wanted to do my speech over. The paper was due Thursday so I wasn't worried about it. I was worried about meeting my dad today. What if he doesn't show up? What if he changes his mind? Liam looked up from his paper with furrowed eyebrows. He looked at me and his face softened. "Scar stop worrying." He told me, putting down his pencil.
"Liam, what if he doesn't show?" I asked looking down at my bare feet that rested on the old wooden porch. I heard Liam sigh. I don't want Liam to get tired of my problems. I don't want him to get tired and leave; he is the only person that I have to talk to about this subject. If he leaves, who will I have to talk to?
"Scar, you have to remember why you are doing this. You are doing this because you want to know your dad and if he doesn't show up. You still have your parents back home. You still have your grandma, you will still have me. Stop worrying." He said getting up from his chair. He moved over to me, extending his hand out. "Come on you look hungry."
When we walked into the kitchen I saw my Grammy sitting at the table, she was eating chocolate covered cherries. I went to grab one but my Grammy slapped my hand away. "Get your own." She mumbled as she chewed on one. I looked at Liam and he was on the verge of laughing. I rolled my eyes at him.
I was making my way to the refrigerator when I heard, "Liam, would you like one?" I turn on my heels when Liam said "Yes ma'am." I looked at them in disbelief. She is a trader, both of them are. "Grandma!" I blurted out. She had a smile on her face. "Oh Liam I am in trouble. She called me 'grandma.'" Then she started laughing, a real laugh, not a forced one. I smiled as the light in her eyes.
I shook my head and started making my way to pantry. I grabbed the loaf of bread and tossed it on the counter. "Grammy do you want me to make you one?" I asked as I grabbed the meat out of the refrigerator. She shook her head and stood up from the table. "No dear I'm not hungry, I'm going to go and take a nap." She said walking to her room.
When the door behind her shut I put two sliced of bread in the toaster. "I thought we were making sandwiches not toast?" Liam questioned. I turned and saw him looking at me with a raised eyebrow. I smiled when the toast popped up. "The bread sucks when it's soft." I said while making my sandwich. He just shook his head and made his.
I sat down in the back of the café with my coffee in between my hands. I looked at the clock I've been waiting here for almost an hour already, I got here thirty minutes early so my dad is only thirty minutes late. I put the coffee cup up to my lips and took a sip, my coffee was already cold. I looked around the café, there was only two other people here. I would think a man who is trying to make up for seventeen years would be thirty minutes early, not late. I felt my eyes burn. I'm pretty sure there is a good reason that he is late, traffic maybe.
