MAREN

Three boys were led into my small hospital room. Liam gave me a reassuring smile and I nodded at him. He had told me he wanted to introduce me to his band. I was eager to meet them. But at the same time I felt like I had missed so much in my life I had to struggle to catch up. I felt like I was rushed to learn so many names, dates, places, people, things…. I didn’t want to let anyone down by my lack of progress too. Mainly Liam.

“Don’t be intimidated by them, alright?” Liam said, hovering over me in my bed.

I rolled my eyes. “Li, I doubt they’re intimidating. They’re in a pop boy band.”

That drew a smile from him and he laughed a little. “Okay, okay,” He backed away and started to gesture towards the three males.

“Hi, I’m Harry.” The curly haired boy gave a little wave and I smiled and nodded toward him.

“I’m Zayn.” The dark haired boy said, giving me the smallest of smiles. I gave him a small wave.

“And I’m Louis, Liam’s best mate.” The light-brown haired boy said with a cheeky grin. I laughed, glancing over to my brother who shook his head and smiled.

“These boys are like my best mates. We’re in a band together and-” Liam stopped himself before saying any more.

“You need to tell me things so I can remember, yeah? So tell me things. You just can’t leave me in the dark. I promise I won’t became overwhelmed and all that, alright?” I said, exasperated.

He chuckled a little and nodded. “Alright, Maren. But I just want to ease things back in your mind. Slowly.” He added. I rolled my eyes.

“Fine, fine. Keep your little secrets I don’t want them.” I stuck my tongue out at him and crossed my arms over my chest.

“Our band’s called One Direction.” Zayn interjected. I liked his accent I must say. And his tattoos were quite cool.

“I came up with the name I might add.” Harry said with a grin.

“I’d love to listen to you guys sing. Maybe you guys make Li look good,” I teased, glancing over at my brother who threw his head back, laughing.

“It’s the other way around!” Liam said defensively.

“Yeah, yeah,” I waved him off as I laughed along too.

“The five of us are really close and-” Louis began.

“Wait, five? I may not have much of my memory but my counting skills are the same as ever.” I stated.

“Erm, yeah, Niall, uh, fell asleep and we didn’t want to wake him.” Zayn said quickly. They all glanced at each other and I rolled my eyes. Secrets, secrets, secrets…

“Anyway, what Louis was trying to say…” Harry said and they all took turns telling me stories about their memories while they were in The X Factor. None of them sounded familiar but they were definitely entertaining.

Liam glanced at the wall clock. “Lads, I think Maren needs her rest.”

“Aw, Li-Li!” Louis pouted. I giggled.

“Yeah, okay, let’s go, Lou,” Zayn and Harry ushered him out.

“So am I ready to meet this mysterious fifth member that was supposedly asleep?” I asked in a teasing voice.

“Uh, yeah,” Liam nodded. “I’ll go get him.”

He disappeared out the door and I was left alone, staring at the ceiling and yawning. How much of my memory did I loose exactly? Why was I traveling with my brother and his band? How famous was One Direction anyway? Why wasn’t I in school? How much had really changed since I last remembered?

Oh god. My head hurt. I couldn’t help but think about all of these things. I mean, I had a lost a part of my memory, a part of myself. How could this have happened? Ugh. This was frustrating.

My door opened creakily as my brother’s head popped in. “Hey, Mare…” Liam said slowly. I rolled my eyes.

“Li, just let Mr. Fifth Member in,” I said, gesturing for him to open the door wider.

He sighed. Why was he so reluctant to let me meet this guy? Liam swung open the door and a slightly smaller figure stepped out from Liam’s tall shadow. It was the same blonde-haired blue-eyed boy that had been in my room when I woke up. His clothes were changed even though they were rumpled and disheveled. His hair was the same, messily casual I’d say. Now that my head wasn’t so fuzzy, he looked….gorgeous.

“Hi, I’m Niall.” He said. Funny. He had an Irish accent…. Why hadn’t I noticed that before?

“Hi, Niall,” I said, giving a little wave. I glanced over at Liam who looked slightly pained. Ha. Get it? Because our last name is Payne. Oh ha ha I’m hilarious… Oh god what pain medication was I even on?

“Um, so this is the fifth member of our band.” Liam said tightly. What was up? Niall and Liam shared a look.

“So you’re Irish? How’d you end up with these British bums?” I asked Niall with a grin.

“The X Factor. I auditioned with them.” Niall replied, his eyes flickering from me to anywhere else in the room.

I turned to my brother. “Liam, could I have a word with Niall alone?” I raised my eyebrows in question.

“Oh, oh, of course,” He said, fumbling with the door knob as he left the two of us alone.

I needed to ask this Irish boy some questions…
