Mirabel fiddled with the bag strap as she sat on her bed. Dinner had been tense. News of Bruno and Abuela’s fight spread through the family quickly. Everyone kept shooting discreet glances at her and Abuela.

No one spoke throughout the meal, but she could almost hear the accusations. Mirabel, what did you do? Abuela would give her cold looks, and Mirabel shrunk further with each one. Camilo, on the other hand, completely avoided looking at her. She tried not to feel guilty about it.

Mirabel was relieved when the meal was finally finished. She snuck away at the first opportunity and locked herself away in her room. She listened as everyone went to bed.

Once she was sure everyone was gone, she pulled the strap over her shoulder. She silently walked out of her room and into the darkness of the empty house. She wondered if maybe everyone would be relieved that she was gone.

She paused as she passed Bruno’s room.

“I wish I died instead.”

She hesitantly dropped the bag at the bottom of the stairs and walked up. Her heart dropped as she saw the door flicker weakly. She knocked.

No answer. Bruno was probably sleeping. She should just leave.

“I think you should talk to Bruno first. He thinks you’re mad at him.”

Mirabel bit her cheek. She can’t leave yet, not without clearing things up with Bruno first. She tried opening the door, but it was locked.

“Casita, can you unlock the door?” She asked. Casita clacked hesitantly in response. “I just want to check up on him. Make sure he’s alright.”

Mirabel heard a soft click. This time when she turned the knob, the door opened. Wiping her slightly sweaty hand on her dress, Mirabel walked into the room. As she passed the sand curtain, Mirabel could see Bruno sprawled on a pile of sand. He was laying down on his stomach, face smushed into his ruana- which he had taken off and used as a pillow.

“...Bruno?”

Bruno immediately jumped up in shock. He looked wide awake, she doubted he had even been sleeping. “I- What? Mirabel?”

Mirabel awkwardly waved. Bruno just looked at her, then the sand curtain and back again. “What? How did you get in?”

Mirabel winced, giving Bruno an apologetic look. “Sorry to intrude. I asked Casita to let me in.”

“Oh.”

They fell into an awkward silence. The longer the silence went, the more Bruno seemed to shrink into himself. Mirabel reached out towards him, concerned. Her heart broke when he flinched away from her. She pulled her hand back.

“Bruno? What’s wrong?”

Just hours ago they were almost like friends. Now, Bruno seemed more distant than ever.

He sniffled, face falling. “Mirabel… I’m so sorry. I’m sorry. I should’ve never given you a vision. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I understand if you never want to see me again.”

Mirabel stared at her uncle in shock. What? Bruno slumped at her silence.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.” He mumbled, hugging himself tightly.
