Edward is possibly one of the nicest men on the island of Sodor. Edward is very kind-hearted, mature, wise and keen to help a friend in need. The engine drivers trust him to lend a listening ear and sympathetic advice. He is a hard worker too and always does his best to finish a job. Edward has also been the voice of reason to misguided people. If ever an engine driver misbehaves or acts out, it is Edward that Sir Topham Hatt turns to in order to soothe things out.

Edward was in the shed where he lived with the other engine drivers. Their engines were all bigger than Edward's and they boasted about it. Edward lived there with Thomas, Henry, Gordon, and Y/N.

There wasn't much to do that day, so the Sir Topham Hatt only needed a couple workers. Y/N had already been assigned to pull a goods train.

"Sir Topham Hatt is not going to use that engine. He wants strong engines like mine." Gordon said to Edward.

"Come on Gordon, don't be so ACK ACK HACK!" Y/N said and started coughing uncontrollably.

"Good gracious! What a cough." Sir Topham Hatt said with a surprise. Edward and the others looked at Y/N with concern. Earlier that night, they kept hearing Y/N go to the bathroom to blow his nose. And that morning, Y/N complained that his throat felt all cut up.

"Y/N, are you sure you wanna go out today? You don't sound good." Sir Topham Hatt said with concern.

"It's fine. I'll live. It's just a common cold. I'll live." Y/N said with confidence. "Plus, Edward's train is just as good as your's Gordon." Y/N said.

Gordon just scoffed. "Wouldn't the passengers prefer an engine big, fast, and strong?" Gordon said

"Size isn't everything Gordon. My engine is just as reliable as yours. My engine has been in my family for generations." Edward said as he defended his train.

"Exactly. You should scrap it and get a newer one." Gordon said.

Both Y/N and Sir Topham Hatt felt sorry for Edward. "Please sir, can Edward help out today?" Y/N asked Sir Topham Hatt.

"Of course." Sir Topham Hatt said with a smile. Sir Topham Hatt looked over at Edward. "Would you like to come out and help with the passengers today?" Sir Topham Hatt asked Edward.

Edward smiled from ear to ear. "Oh yes please!" Edward said happily and ran to her his engine started. Gordon was without a doubt surprised and speechless. He tried to say something but no words got out.

Soon Edward and Y/N set off.

The others were cross at being left behind. Edward and Y/N worked hard all day. The passenger's and tourist's thought he was very kind and Sir Topham Hatt was very pleased.

Edward took people around the best parts of Sodor. He took them to the seaside, Knapford, the county side, and Vicarstown.

Y/N delivered the goods where they were needed. Coughing and sneezing all the way. People gave him tissues and cough drops wherever he went.

Later that night in the bunkhouse, at dinner, Edward talked about his day. "Sir Topham Hatt said I can go out again tomorrow. What do you think about that?" Edward asked. But before anyone could say anything, Y/N let out a loud sneeze.

Y/N looked miserable. "Y/N? You don't look so good." Thomas said. "It's fine. I'm fine." Y/N said with a smile.

The next day though, Y/N was not fine. His skin was pale, he had dark circles around his eyes, and he was sneezing and coughing violently.

"Alright Y/N, I'm putting you on bed rest for the day. Gordon will handle your job. You shall stay here and a doctor will visit you. That's all there is to it." Sir Topham Hatt said sternly to Y/N. He didn't wanna sound rude to Y/N, but he had to get his point across. His worker safety was his number one priority.

Y/N just nodded his head and curled up in bed.

"You watch me, little Edward, as I rush through with the express. That will be a splendid sight for you." Gordon said to Edward as he was getting his train ready.

"Goodbye, little Edward. Look out for me this afternoon." Gordon said as he headed off.

"Get better soon Y/N." Edward said to his friend with a smile.

Edward went off to do some shunting. He liked shunting. It was fun playing with freight cars. He would come out quietly and gave them a push. Then he would stop, and the freight cars would go bump into the each other.

It was like playing around with bumper cars. But he always made sure not to break them. Freight cars don't come cheap.

Edward played till there were no more freight cars. Then he stopped to rest. Presently, he heard a whistle. It was Gordon's train. Gordon was cross. Instead of nice, shiny, new coaches, he was pulling a dirty freight train.

"A freight train, a freight train, a freight train! The shame of it, the shame of it, oh, the shame of it!" Gordon was mumbling to himself, angrily.

Edward couldn't help but bust out laughing. About ten or so minutes later, there was trouble. A phone rang at the sheds. The foreman went to answer and returned with some news.

"Gordon is stuck up the hill." The porter on the phone said. "I'll send someone up as soon as possible." The foreman said. Henry and Thomas were busy with other things, and Y/N was still out sick. That left only Edward.

"Don't worry, I'm on my way!" Edward said as he was told the news. Edward hoped on the train and took off.

They found Gordon halfway up, and very cross. He was fed up with pulling the freight cars and his train couldn't move. It was as if it had refused to move another inch.

Edward soon arrived and pulled up right behind Gordon's train. "I'm here to help!" Edward said with enthusiasm.

"Oh no." Gordon groaned. "I'm gonna be here forever." He mumbled

"What's that supposed to mean?" Edward asked. "That tin can won't be able to push my train." Gordon fussed.

"You wait and see." Edward said as Gordon got back in his train. Soon Edward's train started pushing Gordon's train up the hill. Edward's train pushed and pushed.

"It can't do it, it can't do it, it can't do it!" Gordon said. "I will do it, I will do it, I will do it!" Edward said

Edward pushed and puffed and puffed and pushed as hard as ever he could. And almost before he realized it, Gordon found himself at the top of the hill.

"I've done it, I've done it, I've done it!" Gordon said proudly. He forgot all about kind Edward and didn't say thank you. But Edward was happy because he had been so helpful.
