Y/n had been a S.H.I.E.L.D agent for several years, being personally selected by Director Fury and transferring from the military, she knew how to take care of herself. The organisation was like a second home, she spent most of her time with the avengers and even trained with them in the mornings.

That's where she met Steve Rogers, of course y/n had heard of the great Captain America, it was nearly impossible not to as he was all over the news. A few months ago there were rumours that Steve, along with the other Avengers, were spending their time at S.H.I.E.L.D headquarters. That's when she came into the usually quiet gym, her boxing gloves in hand, just to find Steve Rogers was using the punching bag instead.

"Sorry, I was just about to leave" Steve said as he noticed someone walk in. Y/n watched from afar as he threw a few punches at the beaten bag before stepping back, his dirty blonde hair slick with sweat as he seemed to have been boxing for a while.

"That's alright, I can come back" she spoke and Steve turned around to see y/n in her black workout gear. He politely shook his head and made his way over to the gym bag by the bench near him.

"I've seen you around, y/n isn't it?" He asked with a small smile and y/n nodded.

"That's me" she shrugged and Steve hummed an acknowledgement.

"I'm Steve"

"I know, Captain America - the star spangled man with a plan" she chuckled and he rolled his eyes playfully as he unzipped his bag and pulled out a water bottle.

"That brings back memories" Steve smiled and took a sip of water.

There was a pause as he packed his things away but instead of saying goodbye and walking out the gym, Steve put his bag down and made his way over to her by the punching bag.

"Want a training partner?"

Since then, Steve and y/n trained together almost every morning, with Steve heading out on missions afterward while y/n stayed behind on the monitors. She even gave him her number, showing Steve how to call and text. This ended up in him discovering voice memos and he would record messages to her instead of texting.

Y/n couldn't help but smile when a notification with his name appeared on her lockscreen, she found herself sneaking looks across the table when they had group meetings. Maybe y/n would run into him in the hallways more than she should have, knowing that with their busy schedules, it would be hard to be anything but friends. Nonetheless that didn't stop the heat reaching her cheeks as they shared the occasional sandwich during lunch hour.

-

However, that was a while ago. It wasn't as if anything had happened, just that their work began to take president and the hours they could train together dwindled. With the looming threat of Hydra resurfacing, S.H.I.E.L.D was thrust into more chaos than ever before.

Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer - that's what they say.

So that's what y/n did, keeping a close eye on Rumlow as she knew something was off. It was as if she couldn't trust anyone anymore, with Hydra spies infecting the organisation like wildfire. Y/n stuck with Natasha, Steve and Sharon, knowing that they were some of the few authentic agents left. Things were difficult, Hydra was everywhere. They couldn't meet anywhere or even call each other without the suspicion that they were being monitored.

One morning, Steve suddenly pulled y/n aside in the corridor, his expression hardened and serious as he glanced around the hallway for anyone watching.

"Alexander Pierce had called me to his office, it's definitely nothing good" Steve whispered under his breath. He clutched her arm with one hand while the other was pinned to her waist. They were backed up against a wall so the security camera watching them couldn't make out what they were saying.

"Want backup?" Y/n murmured back, she found his blue eyes and his expression softened.

"I should be okay" Steve mumbled "but I should find you afterward" he finished with a short sigh.

"If there is an afterward" she muttered "Peirce is as corrupt as they come"

"I know," he said with a sad smile "but you don't have to worry about me" Steve tried to reassure her and y/n nodded, he was a super soldier after all.

Just as y/n was about to say something, she noticed agent Rumlow had rounded a corner and walked along the same corridor they were in. He had a gun strapped to his belt and his dark hair lay flat as he scowled at the two of them skeptically.

It was fairly obvious that Steve and y/n were acting a little suspicious. They were speaking in hushed voices, in an empty hallway, with Steve holding her close so they weren't heard.

As Rumlow neared, his hand hovered over his gun as he walked straight at them.

"Go with it" Steve whispered as he noticed the oncoming agent. Y/n nodded, unsure what he had meant but it soon made sense as Steve leaned in and kissed her. It was slow at first, she closed her eyes and sank into the movement as she heard the footsteps in the corridor halt before walking on.

"Steve" she breathed but he quickly cut her off as he kissed her once more. They stayed like that until they heard the door at the end of the corridor close, indicating that Rumlow had left.

"Sorry" he said, clearing his throat he pulled away "Rumlow would have suspected us otherwise" Steve finished, breaking eye contact as his cheeks flushed with embarrassment.

"I'm guessing Natasha taught you that move" y/n hummed, she felt a short stab of jealousy but she knew that they were just friends.

"Something like that" he said "but it's a useful tactic" Steve chuckled and y/n felt slightly disappointed that was the only reason.

"Yeah I guess it worked" she smiled at him and pushed herself from the wall. "So let's meet in the elevator, no cameras remember" y/n suggested and Steve nodded an agreement.

"Sounds good, I'll message you when I'm done. It's the top floor"

"I'll be there"
