In the meantime, a few weeks had passed and since there seemed to be no danger that Vegeta would crash the Capsule Corporation, Bulma was able to continue working on her latest project with peace of mind.
And when she finally presented this to her father, he praised her to the skies: "That's fantastic, Bulma! So Vegeta can not only train in the gravity room, but also fight against simulated opponents!"
"I just hope the guy appreciates it too," she grumbled to herself. But then her grim expression turned into a mean smile. "I already know exactly who he's going to fight first."
"You really only built that for Vegeta?" Yamcha asked uncertainly, looking over Bulma's shoulder.
She stood in front of a large desk and made a few final configurations here, tapping the buttons wildly there, with a highly concentrated expression on her face.
"Bullshit," she said casually. "You can use the room too if you want."
Yamcha looked down at the desk skeptically. "I still think it's strange," he insisted. "After all, I've lived here for years and you never thought of--"
"So far we haven't been in such a great danger," Bulma grumbled to herself. "Besides... you hardly sleep here lately anyway."
Yamcha sighed. Then he looked at her face half, but he wasn't able to read her expression.
"I... I've got things to do," he claimed.
"As am I." Now she sounded clearly upset. "So don't bug me."
"Yeah, get out of here," Vegeta's voice suddenly sounded behind them.
Bulma had heard him but was too immersed in what she was doing to pay attention to his appearance. Yamcha, on the other hand, turned angrily to him. Vegeta kept his gaze fixed on him as he entered the lab, pointing his thumb over his shoulder.
"...if you just came here to chatter," he finished his sentence.
Then he stopped close to Yamcha, crossed his arms over his bare chest and eyed him disparagingly. "At least I've never seen you train here."
Yamcha met his piercing gaze, but a bead of sweat formed on his forehead.
"I--" he was about to start a justification, but then Bulma's voice drew the attention of both of them.
"That's it!"
Vegeta immediately walked towards her, regardless of whether someone was in his way. In fact, he wouldn't even touched Yamcha with his shoulder, but this one had nevertheless backed away from him as a precaution. He now watched as Vegeta stood next to Bulma and asked her brusquely why the hell she had called him here. He watched the two talk to each other. He watched the distance between them. And then he realized again that he didn't just dislike Vegeta because of his rude manner and his frightening power...
"I've prepared a special training partner for you in the simulator," Bulma finally said, almost looking a little amused. "Think you can beat him?"
Then she pointed to the door that led into the combat simulator. Vegeta gave her another skeptical sight, but actually he was quite curious about this training partner who was supposed to be waiting for him inside.
So he finally made his way in there and as the door closed behind him he looked at the square room, the bare steel walls. And suddenly these started to distort! With astonished eyes he watched how his whole surroundings changed. And then he recognized quite quickly where he was.
"This place..." he murmured to himself. "This is the wasteland where I first fought Kakarot... Which means..."
Suddenly a person appeared floating in the air in front of him! But instead of Kakarot, who he was actually expecting, he showed up himself! In the same battle gear he had worn in the fight against Goku.
Vegeta's pupils dilated. "But how?! I'm fighting myself?! What the hell?!"
"Heh heh heh... Consider yourself lucky," the simulated Vegeta sounded cocky. "A super elite like myself, wasting his time playing with scum like you."
Vegeta wrinkled his nose angrily as he didn't think he sounded like that at all! But when he saw his simulated self preparing for battle, he did the same.
"Damn that blasted woman!" he cursed. "What the hell is her problem?!"
And when the two Vegeta's finally attacked each other, Bulma couldn't help a gleeful grin as she watched their fight on the screen. Yamcha stood next to her and watched the fight too, but he kept shifting his gaze to Bulma's face. He didn't like the way she watched Vegeta at all.
"Tonight," he suddenly said to her. "Shall we go out to dinner tonight?"
"I thought you didn't have time," she replied offish without looking at him.
"Yes, I... I can postpone that."
"Well..." Then Bulma raised her head and looked at him. "But I have work to do."
And there was something strange in her eyes that Yamcha felt uneasy. He suddenly felt both disappointed and guilty. And then, as Bulma continued to watch the fight, he felt superfluous on top of that. Dejected, he finally left the laboratory.
...
After Vegeta managed to defeat his fake self, the simulation room door opened again and he stepped out. Bulma turned to him expectantly and eyed him with a raised eyebrow.
"That... that was unbelievable," he had to admit while staring in amazement. Then he looked at his fists. "On the one hand, I feel drained, but on the other hand, my body isn't even a bit..."
"Because it all just happened in your mind," Bulma said, tapping her temple, one eye cheekily closed.
"What?" Vegeta looked at her blankly.
But when Bulma explained to him how the simulation room works, he gradually began to understand. His eyes narrowed and his gaze lost again in the void.
"I see," he said. "So I've got to surpass myself if I'm going to keep up with Kakarot... I've got to put my old self behind..."
Bulma let out a soft giggle from behind her hand. "Guess, yes. Because I saw that the almighty Saiyan prince wasn't enough of a challenge for you, huh?"
Vegeta raised his head and looked in her direction. He glared at her and not a single word of thanks passed his lips. But on the contrary.
"You..." he said to her. "You really know how to piss me off."
Bulma backed away angry, but also a little scared. "W-What? Oh, come on, I was just messing around with you!"
He looked away from her again and began to open and close his lowered fists. There was a moment of silence before he suddenly said, dead serious,
"More."
"Huh?" Bulma didn't understand.
And the second her head wondered indignantly, her body absorbed the deep tone of his voice, the demanding yet calm way he emphasized that single word in a way she found both unsettling and exhilarating at the same time and sent a shiver down her spine.
"You're right," he explained without looking at her. "It wasn't enough... You're going to make me a stronger opponent."
Now her view suddenly changed, and she forced herself to focus all her senses on sheer outrage.
"Don't you take that tone with me!", she admonished and crossed her arms in front of her chest.
Apparently Vegeta also knew quite well how to piss HER off! But he wasn't impressed at all by her warning and instead just ran past her with his head held high.
Bulma followed his walk with angry eyes. //I-Is he ignoring me again?!//
And sure enough, he didn't waste another word on her and just left her alone in her lab. And only now, after having to think about this arrogant prince for a moment, did she realize that she really was alone. That Yamcha was gone too...
Vegeta, meanwhile, had already succumbed to his determined and angry thoughts on his way to the gravity room.
//I'm going to get stronger and crush those androids!// he thought. // And I will surpass you, Kakarot. Just wait... You'll realize that I'M number one!//
