"I've never seen anyone as crazy as Vegeta. Somehow he seems to be totally obsessed."
How true this exaggerated remark of Dr. Briefs was, he, his wife and his daughter should realize just a few moments later. But still, there was a relaxed atmosphere in the Briefs' living room. Nobody suspected anything of the imminent explosion.
Mrs. Briefs had just placed a tray of delicious pastries on the coffee table and then sat down on the couch with Bulma.
She immediately listened to her father's statement and looked at him across the table as he approached. As usual, a cigarette butt was caught in the corner of his mouth and his little cat Scratch sat on his shoulder.
The fascination with his impetuous new housemate obviously didn't let go of him.
"He's training in higher and higher gravity and absolutely nothing seems to be able to stop him," he continued. "Besides he always wants new machines, which he then only turns into scrap... He's in the space capsule 18 hours a day!"
"I'm not surprised at all," Bulma said. "Vegeta can't do anything but fight..."
Suddenly Mrs. Briefs intervened enthusiastically, "Well, I think that's a very attractive trait about him!"
Dr. Briefs looked at her. And as always, he reacted quite calmly to his wife's crushes. "I always thought you adored Goku and didn't like Vegeta at all," he said.
"My, my, Goku is sharp too!"
Again, no jealous reaction from her husband. But Bulma now had to lower her head in embarrassment while she poured herself a coffee.
And her mother's crushes just wouldn't stop.
"But Vegeta has this well-moderated, stoic sense about him that I can't pass up. Not to mention that wide forehead of his is so individualistic and cute!" She raised the coffee cup to her lips. But before she finally sipped from it, she explained her summary of this extremely delicate topic, "I know! Some time your Mama will have to take him out on a date!"
"Oh my gosh..." Bulma moaned softly in embarrassment.
Although she was used to her mother's open-hearted manner, she still felt a little uncomfortable with it from time to time. QUITE uncomfortable even when it came to Vegeta. Which made her be surprised a little about herself...
And now she was also surprised at the feeling that came over her at the sight of him.
Exhausted, Vegeta lay in his hospital bed in front of her, his eyes narrowed painfully, a breathing mask over his mouth and nose giving him oxygen. His worst wounds had been tended to and bandaged, and the open areas of his skin were covered with scratches.
Bulma had done what she could to help him, but she and her parents still feared for his well-being. With the two now standing behind her, she knelt by Vegeta's bed, her worried gaze fixed on his face. She could hardly bear to see him like this, but she didn't want to turn away from him either.
This well-moderated, stoic man suddenly seemed so vulnerable. Never in her life would she have thought it possible to see him in such a state. And then in her own home.
"It's a miracle he walked away from an explosion of that magnitude with such minor injuries," said Dr. Briefs, who was standing next to his wife with his arms crossed.
And in that moment, Bulma felt a wave of deep relief that that was the case. A word of agreement was on her lips, but she said nothing.
"I have never seen anything like the resilience these Saiyans display." her father added and then her mother sobbed into the tissue, which she crumpled in her hand.
"Oh, poor Vegeta!"
And before she began to cry again, her husband gently took her by the shoulders and led her outside. "Come. Let's leave them alone for a while..."
Meanwhile, Bulma got back to her feet, her troubled gaze constantly fixed on Vegeta's face. She couldn't really explain to herself where this unbelievably deep sympathy for him suddenly came from. Was it just this sudden change of circumstances? This altered state, in which he was inevitably? Which was his own fault on top of that?
Because it was his own arrogance that had gotten him into this miserable situation in the first place! And Bulma actually had no understanding for that!
But still... If she saw him lying there now...
She finally had to look away from him with a soft sigh and then decided to follow her parents out into the hallway.
But when she suddenly heard a noise behind her, she turned to Vegeta again. Did he wake up?
"I'll... get stronger..."
Bulma's eyes widened when she heard him speak.
"Kakarot..."
His voice cracked and muffled through the breathing mask. And since he didn't move or open his eyes, Bulma realized he was talking in his sleep.
"I'll beat you..."
She had stayed where she was, her hands clasped in front of her chest, and now she looked back at him compassionately. He seemed to be dreaming and judging by his tight expression it was a nightmare. At that moment, Bulma just felt terribly sorry for him. His urge to trump Goku and to be the strongest seemed to be deeply rooted in him. It was like a self-destructive passion.
//He is always so frustrated,// she thought sadly, watching his facial expression. //So proud and so sad at the same time...//
And indeed, Vegeta found himself in the midst of a horrible nightmare.
Running down a long, dark corridor with no end in sight his footsteps echoed on the invisible walls. He felt like he had already run thousands of miles, he was sweating, gasping, his legs hurt. But he couldn't stop. Not until he caught him.
Suddenly he appeared right in front of him! Kakarot! He turned his head to the side and gave Vegeta a look over his shoulder. Then he grinned.
"Kakarooot!" Vegeta screamed his name. He ran straight towards him but couldn't reach him. Gritting his teeth, he picked up the pace again and launched a leap attack. "I... I'm stronger than you...!"
But then Kakarot suddenly disappeared!
Frightened, Vegeta stopped. And on impulse he whirled around - and got a second fright! Because suddenly this boy from the future had appeared behind him!
"It's you! You're not... the Saiyan!" Vegeta shouted angrily and then without warning, he jumped straight at him and swung his fist out for a punch.
But then the boy disappeared too into nowhere!
Vegeta remained confused and now hectically looked around in all directions.
Suddenly, Kakarot and the boy appeared in front of him at the same time, making him step back in surprise, and without hesitation they both then demonstrated their transformation into Super Saiyans for him! The darkness of the room shone in their bright, golden light, so brightly that Vegeta had to hide his eyes behind his raised fist to avoid going blind.
"A-Argh...!!" he shouted strained.
And then he was overwhelmed by such a violent wave of anger that he now ignited his own aura. With concentrated power, he activated all the energies in his body, shouting out his anger, trying to drown out the whooshing sounds of their auras.
"I am the strongest!!"
But neither his words seemed to reach them nor his strenght to impress them. And his aura unfortunately didn't shine half as brightly as that of the two Super Saiyans... Who now took his futile attempt as an opportunity to mock him with a sneer.
And to top off their mockery, they increase their power, their dazzling splendor, many times over! Their auras literally exploded and Vegeta was pushed back by this unbelievable force.
With crossed arms he defended himself against it. He didn't want to give up and tried to floated closer again, tried to reach the two.
But in vain. Kakarot and the boy grew further and further away.
Vegeta's face was marked by sheer horror, he was shaking all over.
"There are too fast... I'll never be able to catch up with them..." he realized, stunned when the two finally disappeared from his field of vision. "But I... I'm the one with warrior blood in my vains..."
He was frantic, threw out his clenched fists, jerked his head back and yelled, "FATHEEER!!!"
...
Overcome with frustration, he fell back and then floated through zero gravity space with his eyes closed. Everything around him went dark and silent.
...
But suddenly he heard a distant voice. Calling his name.
"Vegeta... some day you will be the strongest Saiyan in the universe."
And he knew this voice, he recognized it immediately!
"Father?"
When he opened his eyes again, he saw him dimly in front of him. His father. And right next to him he saw himself as a young boy. They both stood in their royal robes in front of a large window and looked out, watching dozens of Saiyan space capsules being launched into space against a pitch-black background.
"Those ships are headed to distant galaxies." Vegeta heard his father speak again and this time it sounded like he was standing right next to him. "From the day we are born, we Sayians are examen for our power and leadership... The weakest of our people are sent to planets far away, where they face no threats from our enemies."
"Hmph. Did I pass", commented his younger self in his childish but already very arrogant manner, while keeping his arms crossed over his chest and looking out the window.
King Vegeta now turned his face to him. "Vegeta. You come from a strong bloodline and you possess the potential power to join the super elite of all Saiyans." He looked down at him almost benevolently. "Never forget where you're from and train very hard, my son. Because if you've proven yourself worthy, perhaps someday you will become a Super Saiyan."
...
After those monumental words, his father's image disappeared in front of Vegeta's eyes - which were now shaking and shining with enthusiasm.
//I haven't forgotten, what you said, father. I haven't forgotten my destiny,// he thought with renewed confidence, and then his mouth curled into an arrogant smirk. //And now I know, that I will be stronger than Kakarot!//
He clenched his fists and this sudden, victorious feeling overwhelmed him so much that he had to stretch out all fours and then shouted almost megalomaniacly out into the dark room, followed by a confident laugh,
"I AM A SUPER SAIYAN!!"
