The next day, Bulma continued the promised repair of the control panel. And while she was at it, she could also repair the dent that Vegeta had pressed into the outer wall of the gravitational machine the day before.
//That ruffian...!// she thought dissatisfied.
After all, this room was built just for him, and he was being so reckless with it!
But it had obviously enraged him violently what Bulma had said to him at this spot. And while she packed up her tools after the work was done, she reminisced for a moment about this grueling situation. In her mind's eye she could see Vegeta, could almost feel his breath on her face. For a brief moment she really thought he was going to kiss her - what had made her heart beat faster, she had to admit. Because he was already immensely attractive, despite his dangerous aura... But still, it was just fun! Only a joke! She just wanted to annoy him!
Didn't she?
Before Bulma could finally exit the gravity room again, Vegeta suddenly appeared in the doorway and her heart sank instantly. Because she had just had to think very intensely about him, about their recent dispute - which had also ended in an extremely interesting way.
But as quickly as this alluring tension could arise between them, it could also dissolve just as quickly. And so they faced each other rather disgruntled and Bulma just explained to him that he could now fully use the gravity room again.
On leaving, however, she couldn't help but make a reproachful remark, "You can count yourself really lucky that I let you live in my house and you can use our great technology! You could show a little more gratitude!"
"I am grateful," Vegeta said suddenly and Bulma turned to him, very puzzled.
He had his back to her, and what he then added made her heart not only drop one floor deeper, but almost stop completely.
"Grateful that Kakarot didn't marry you."
Bulma's cheeks immediately turned red. "W-What...?"
Vegeta didn't move, still gave her the cold shoulder and let this moment affect her for a horribly long time.
...
"Then I would be in his home now!" he finally exclaimed in disgust, turning his head to one side. "Bah, I'm getting sick just thinking about it!!"
"Eh?" Now Bulma had to blink in front of herself, very puzzled again. "H-How did you come up with something like that? Goku and I are just friends. It has always been like this."
Then Vegeta narrowed his eyes for just a moment. Actually, he couldn't give a shit who Kakarot was doing it with! He just wanted to outdo this third-rate wannabe Saiyan! ...And then take him apart!
Bulma, however, was already wondering how he came up with such an absurd thought. And seeing the skeptical expression on his face, she couldn't help but wonder, //Doesn't he believe me...?//
She hadn't given him any reason to think so... had she? Automatically she ran through her recent conversations in her mind. And then, sharp-witted as she was, it suddenly hit her like a blow!
But when nothing happened seconds later, Bulma opened one eye.
"Are you going to stare at me like that the whole time?" she asked him skeptically and then let out a soft sigh. "Sheesh, you're just as clumsy as Goku."
At that Vegeta twitched and his puzzled look multiplied in anger.
She had remembered how Vegeta had looked at that moment!
And she promptly put a hand over her mouth.
"Oh wow, you misunderstood me!" she immediately clarified. "I didn't mean that Goku and I... But that you as well as him... No, stop! I don't want to compare you to him again!"
Her face twisted energetically, while waving her hands in his direction. But secretly she found the mere fact that this had bothered him somehow amusing as well. Could that be a hint of jealousy?
Vegeta clenched his fist and now his face twisted too - but with anger.
"Kakarot and I have NOTHING in common!" he mocked over his shoulder. "And soon he's going to have trouble keeping up with me!"
"I think so too," Bulma replied and Vegeta promptly looked a bit taken aback. Noticing his expression, she added, "Well, as hard as you train!"
He hadn't expected this encouragement at all, and he had to admit that it felt somehow... good.
Bulma stretched. "You can continue with that now, by the way," she said casually, and on the way to the exit she giggled a little. "I can't believe you thought I kissed Goku..."
Vegeta didn't want to hear any of this women's gossip and in order not to show any weaknesses in the first place, he gave her the cold shoulder again. Because if she didn't see his face, she didn't know how her words affected him either - neither those already said nor those that followed.
"Speaking of kisses..." Bulma had stopped in the doorway, one hand resting on the doorframe. And for the first time her gaze turned really soft towards Vegeta - even if he wasn't looking at her at all.
"Next time maybe don't think about it too much and just do it..."
...
With those words she finally left and Vegeta remained in his pose. His angry expression remained unchanged. But deep down, he felt something... A feeling he was quick to put aside and replace with sheer relief that the annoying woman was finally gone! And he was able to train in peace again!
So he didn't let any more time pass and started immediately.
The 400-times gravity was instantly switched on and soon he went from his usual warm-up phase to his strength training, for which his own body weight was helpful as always.
Hours later, he barely felt the high resistance and felt it was time to start another attempt at transformation.
//Today I'll make it,// he was sure. //I can feel it...//
So he gathered all his strength, his entire body and face beginning to tense in strained rage. Eyes wrinkled in anger, mouth wide open, he let out a powerful, long scream, fists clenched tightly. His muscles seemed to pump up, the veins prominently on it.
//I can do it...! I... I...//
He stayed in that position for a miserably long moment, clenching his fists tighter and screaming louder and louder--
"Argh...!"
And as if something had snapped inside him, he suddenly broke his stance and collapsed abruptly. He hit the hard metal floor with a thud, knees first.
Teeth bared in anger and eyes wide, Vegeta stared down at his fists in disbelief. //I... I can't... H-How... is it that I still can't make it?// he thought angrily. //I... I'm--//
Suddenly his head snapped up.
"Maybe don't think about it too much and just do it..."
His anger gave way to a stunned expression and for a moment he just stared blankly in front of him. That hint, as simple as it might seem, wasn't even that stupid. Vegeta had to admit to himself that the weak earth woman was right... and that he really did think way too much sometimes.
Not that he hadn't tried to numb his head with rigorous workouts before - but he always wanted to banish thoughts that supposedly distracted from his training. But now he understood that it was his training itself that he was thinking about too much!
//My movements have to be more intuitive,// was actually his last thought for this training session.
Because from then on he only concentrated on his body. He closed his eyes and felt deep inside himself. He felt the tons of pressure on him, felt his aching muscles, felt the blood rushing through his veins. And after getting off the ground, he continued his training in that frame of mind.
Everything felt right, really every movement was right. Vegeta did such a good workout that he completely lost track of time. It could have been hours or days or years that he now spent in the gravity room, in this room surrounded by dusky red. He hardened his muscles on the ground, in the air, testing his stamina and reflexes on the floating robotic opponents who he could make appear by pressing a button. And he felt more powerful than ever!
And for the first time he really felt like he was almost there. The transformation he had sought for so long was now within reach.
Gathering his strength once more, all of his energy seemed to expand throughout his body. His muscles pumped to the max, his veins swelled and he was now screaming out all his hate and anger!
"RAAAAAAHHHHHHH...!!!"
An energetic aura began to explode from his body, and as he jerked his head back, both his eyes and hair flickered brightly for a brief moment.
As suddenly as this boost had broken out of him, it was gone just as quickly. He failed to maintain this state, and when the light faded, he was again surrounded by the usual dusky red of gravity room.
Vegeta gasped his lungs out, feeling overwhelmed by his emotions. The happiness of almost making it, but also the frustration of not having made it, brought tears to his eyes.
He couldn't help but let out another loud scream during his heavy breathing, eyes narrowed. And when he opened his eyes again, he was staring down at his clenched fists, which were shaking uncontrollably.
Yes. He was almost there.
And even if he hadn't admitted it... somehow it was SHE he owed his progress to. She of all people, this weak woman from earth.
