"I don't know why someone would ever want to be a hero, Jem."

"What do you mean?"

"Heroes always come to terrible fates. Why would some one want to choose that?"

"Well, you're seeing it from the hero's point of view, aren't you? It's easy for the rest of us to answer."

"Is it?"

"Sure. Heroes aren't heroes for their own sakes."

"You lost me."

"Ana, heroes don't risk their lives for themselves. Heroes exist because we need them."

"I think I got it. Keep going."

"We need them. We cry out for help and those few brave, selfless people answer the call."

"And we call them heroes."

The hero doesn't say 'I am a hero'. He says, 'they need help, I will help'. He was hurt and scarred, but he will not be bitter. No, he says instead, 'no one will hurt like I do. No one will suffer the way I do.' A hero sees a need and fills it without a thought for their own comfort or well-being. A hero sees and stares down the evils of this world, yet retains the hope for a brighter future. He lives by a motto, that he will swear is true. Because of what he has gone through and the pain done to him. His ever present thought whenever he face The Choice.
