I stand to the side,
seen by none,
except for this special one.
I am many things.
A friend,
a protector,
the courage in a smile.
He believes in me
and that's all I need
to live happily.
But,
what about that dreadful day
when his parents say
'he's grown out of it'?
The day when
he's no longer lonely,
he can defend himself,
he takes on the world bravely?
That is the day
I cease to exist.
It scares me,
the idea of what
may happen that day.
But I find
I'm okay with the future I see.
He will be okay
because
on my last day
he will be
all the things he needed from me.
