Masons POV
Today is Kayla's 17th birthday. And for her birthday I'm taking her out to a party. Her first party.
I slowly got up to check the time.
6:35am. still an hour and a half till she normally gets up. she loves her sleep ins. she always has.
I laid back down and tried to get some more shut eye. but I couldn't stop thinking about her.
She's grown up so quickly. But she is still a little brat, as always.
I remember when we would fight over who was the oldest. I've always been the oldest though. two months older.
Or when she would say I'm too young to have a girlfriend.
I laid there not thinking that time has flown by.
Shit. 7:54
I laid there thinking of her for over an hour? whoa.
I got up and grabbed my jeans and coke-a-cola t-shirt. I ran my fingers through my hair and put gel in it. grabbed my phone and headed downstairs.
Told my parents where I was going and started jogging to Kayla's house.

Kayla's POV
I woke up to the sun beaming through my blinds.
I sat up and stretched.
Is that...?
Pancakes!
"Oh my god!"
My mum only ever makes pancakes when it's my birthday because they are so special.
I ran down stairs and into the kitchen where my mum was cooking.
"Thank you thank you thank you!!!"
"You're welcome honey."
I never would say this but I think my mum deserves this. shes the only family I have left.
"Mum?"
"Yes sweetie?"
"I..I love you."
I scanned her face for some sorta reaction.
And there it was. a single tear running down her face.
"I love you too."
**********
After breakfast the door rang. I already knew who it was anyway.
It was mason.
Oh my god! I completely forgot that we are going to a party tonight. mums all good about it. as long and he or anyone else takes advantage of me.
I ran to the door and saw him standing there with a box of chocolate chip cookies.
"Hey kayla. happy birthday." he said while handing me the box of cookies.
"Aww thanks mason!"
I put the box down and gave him a bear hug. of cause he returned the hug even tighter.
I let him in and we walked up the stairs to my room. on the way he said his hellos to my mum.
"So what have you got so far?" He asked as he jumped on to the beanbag in the corner of my room.
"A new sketch book, pencils, a new laptop, clothes and now cookies." I said while shoving a cookie in my mouth.
He just laughed in a low husky voice.
He kept looking at me, then the box of cookies.
"Do you want one?"
"Huh? oh nah I'm alright."
"Then why are you looking at the box?"
"Cause there is another present in it."
I looked at him while I opened the box.
He was right, there was something else in the box. I pulled out a piece of paper.
"I found it in the remains of your house. it was in a box of photos. your mum has the rest...."
I wasn't listening to one thing he was saying. I was just staring at the piece of paper on my hands. The two pieces of paper.
They were photos. one of me, my mum and my dad. We were at the beach. the photo was taken two days before he died.
The other, me and MJ as children. We were at my house playing dress ups. I was a cowgirl and he was a prince. we were holding hands and laughing.
"Hey kay? are you listening?"
"Oh, what? sorry. I blanked out."
"thanks mason, a lot. you don't know how much appreciate this. these were my favourite photos out of all of them."
"Kayla..."
He looked at me and held my hand. it made my whole body got goose bumps.
"I would do anything to make you happy. i know how much you were close to you're father. and that MJ kid. So I went to the house and looked around. I found them in some sorta metal box."
"This is the best birthday I have ever had!"
"No. correction. this is the best birthday morning ever. you still have the rest of the day."

I will try and make things happier for them.
