"Kyung-mi! Food is almost ready, be sure to get everything together and sit it by the door." "Okay, Mom." Kyung-mi got dressed and set everything they needed for their small shop and placed it by the door. By then, food was already done and Kyung-mi and her mother sat at the table and ate. While eating, Kyung-mi noticed her mom looked troubled. "Mom, what's wrong? You're making the face again..." Her mom looked at her and gave her a smile. "Nothing is wrong, Kyung-mi." But she knew that her mom was lying. "What's wrong? I know something is wrong, just tell me." Her mom's smile faded away and said, "The landlord stopped by yesterday and he's demanding his money by the end of this week. We won't be able to pay the full price. I'm afraid that we might be kicked out and be left on the street."
"Why haven't you told me this? I'll go talk with him and demand that we have another week!" Her mom quickly said, "No! It's our fault that we can't afford to live here, he's just doing his job." Kyung-mi looked at her mom, "You're way too nice, mom. It wouldn't hurt if we can just have a little talk with him about our living conditions. I'm sure he'll understand." Her mom looked down at her food and said nothing, clearly very sad. "Hey mom, it's alright...I'll work extra hard in the shop and use my charm to get some sales. You don't have to worry about anything, you've already done enough."
A tear ran down her mom's cheek, "You're just like your father, so charismatic and hard-working. We'll both work extra hard to make ends meet!" Kyung-mi and her mom both gave each other a smile and finished eating breakfast. On the way out of the door, her mom grabbed the stuff by the door and Kyung-mi grabbed the bike at the side of the house. Kyung-mi helped her mom on the bike and then Kyung-mi got on the bike and rode her and her mom to their shop.
Once they got there, Kyung-mi helped her mom off the bike and opened their shop. Kyung-mi stood in front of the shop and advertised her shop to the people walking by it. With Kyung-mi's charming nature, she managed to get a lot of people to buy things which made business that day flow. After the day ended, Kyung-mi told her mom that she can go ahead, take the bike, and go home early and she would close the shop. Her mom gave her a worried look and said, "Are you sure? A girl like you shouldn't be walking alone at night." Kyung-mi looked over the counter and said, "Don't worry mom, I'll take the bus."
Her mom looked at her with a 'really' look, "You always miss the bus, Kyung-mi. How can I trust you to keep your word?" "That was when I was a teenager, I'm a grown woman. I'm more responsible." It took her mom a few minutes to think about it, "Okay, okay. I trust you. But don't be calling me early in the morning because you missed the bus and got lost trying to find your way home." Kyung-mi's face went red with embarrassment, "That was only one time, mom. Now go before it gets dark." Her mom said her goodbyes, took the bike, and left.
Kyung-mi was so busy, trying to make sure that the lock to the shop was secured, that she had only 10 minutes to go to the station before the bus leaves. She grabbed her stuff and ran as fast as she could to the bus station. As she walked down the stairs, the bus's doors started to close. "Wait a minute! Wait!" But when she got to the doors, it was already closed. "I was only a minute late! Come one!" Out of breath, Kyung-mi sat down on a bench to catch her breath and wait for the other bus to come.
Not even a minute later, a well-dressed business man came to her and sat next to Kyung-mi and sat his suitcase down on the floor. The businessman turned toward Kyung-mi, "Ma'am, do you have a minute?" Kyung-mi looked at the businessman and said, "I don't believe in Jesus, I'm Atheist." "It's not that. I'd like to give you a great opportunity-" Before he could finish his sentence, Kyung-mi interrupted and said, "Oh, you're not here to talk about your lord and savior Jesus christ? Sorry about that, I actually do believe in god, I'm not Atheist. I wasn't in the mood to hear about people trying to get me into their religion. Sorry..What were you going to say?" The business man regained himself and said, "Ma'am, would you like to play a game with me?" "Dang, we're here alone with no one walking through and you came up to me and asked to play a game with me, man that's-" As Kyung-mi was rambling, the businessman got his suitcase, placed it next to him and opened it to reveal money and a red and blue card. Kyung-mi stopped talking once she saw what was in the suitcase.
"Ma'am, you've played ddakji before, haven't you?" The business man held up the two cards and said, "Play ddakji with me. Each time you win, I'll give you 100,000 won."
