"Of course, my son.", my father spoke up and put his newspaper aside. "When I first saw your mother at the ball, I knew immediately that she is the one I am going to marry. Her danced so helplessly and seemed so out of place that I fell in love straight away. I vowed never to let that woman go, no matter what.", my father looked at my mother so lovingly that they were both to be envied.. They really, really loved each other.
"Oh Nikolas, stop it!" his wife protested and I could see her blushing. My father must have had other plans and got up to pull my mum to her feet and spin her around the room in circles. She looking so elegant and happy together. As if they were on their first day together. My mother had made good progress at dancing since then.
"Come join us, Liam." She held out her arm and I stood up to walk around to go to my parents. They hugged me and I closed my eyes for a moment. "If you think she's the one, you gotta hold her, ya hear?" I nodded and kissed my mum on the forehead.
"I'll get ready, I still have to go to the raffle..", I grabbed my apple and the rest of the croissant and went back to my room where I let the maid pick out a few things and let the maid run a bath. "Thank you Kathrin. You may go.", I smiled briefly at the maid and then grabbed my cell phone when it wouldn't stop vibrating.
"Hey Ciny." I answered directly and smiled to myself when I heard her voice.
"Hey, I wanted to ask you if you're free today. I don't have homework today." She sounded unsure and if I tell her that unfortunately I can't, it will probably hurt her more than I would like.."Yes, but today I have some important appointments. But let's meet up afterwards. How about three at the cemetery?" I asked and was so relieved when she agreed. "Then you're three! I'm happy.." I waited until she said goodbye and hung up. I happily took a quick jump and made my way to my bathroom.
The draw went quite well, some came out but none named Cinderella Jefferson. Did she sign up? Or hadn't she even tried? Those were the only thoughts I had as I stood at the gate and waited for her.
She was ten minutes, then fifteen minutes late. Eventually an hour. But I didn't give up. She had said that her stepmother was being strict and maybe she was being stopped.. As the shade started to get fresh, I went to a bench in the sun and sat there. I kept the flowers in my hand, which I had fetched for her on the way. With my eyes closed, I enjoyed the sun and hummed quietly to myself.
I don't know how much time passed, but at some point someone came between me and the light. I opened my eyes and saw the blond hair. The young woman looked down with both hands in her jacket pockets. "I thought you'd dumped me completely and you're never coming back," I tried to sound angry but didn't get the kind of reaction I would have expected. I was hoping that she'd try hard to apologize and get on her knees. I guess none of that happened. She just stared at the floor. I slowly got up and walked towards her. "Ciny?" I breathed, getting on one knee in front of her. When I saw tears running down her face, I immediately hugged her. She cried..
Ciny, who usually seems so happy, cried and trembled in my arms. I didn't know what to say or what to say. So I just held her silently and waited for her to calm down.
Eventually we sat down and I handed her a handkerchief to dry her tears. We hadn't exchanged a word until now.. But she seemed to find herself again.
"I'm so sorry you had to wait so long. It's ok if you're mad, if you don't want to see me anymore and if I'm not good enough..", she sobbed to herself and I couldn't believe my ears.
"I beg your pardon? What are you talking about?", I lifted her chin and dried her new tears. "Stop saying such words, Ciny.", I gently stroked the loose strand of hair behind her ear and put the cloth in my pocket. "I don't want an explanation unless you want to talk about it. I just want to know if you're okay and if we should spend the evening together." A slight nod from her side was enough for me. Gently I took her hand and pulled her to her feet. "Come with me, I have to show you something."
Sobbing and defiant, she followed me, but then I had her by my side again and listened to her stories. She seemed to be missing out something, but that wasn't important at the moment. She smiled again and laughter crept out again and again. "Would you like an ice cream?" I asked spontaneously as we passed an ice cream truck and immediately let myself be drawn in. I watched her at the menu and had to smile dreamily. This woman was really something special..
She worked hard, I doubted that not a second. And yet she could laugh like she was carefree and unconcerned. How much do you think she's lost? And still she could laugh.
