when she misses your birthday party - part two (requested)

It was a couple of hours later when Dove heard the sound of footsteps on the floor.

She slowly opened her heavy eyes and lifted her head from the back of the sofa, rubbing her hand over it in an attempt to soothe the slight pain she felt from falling asleep in the position she had.

She saw you walking towards her with a blanket wrapped around your shoulders and she patted the sofa, hoping you'd sit down beside her.

In silence, you did just that.

She reached for her phone to check the time, but you began to speak before she got the chance.

"It's almost three am."

She looked into your eyes, noticing that they were still full of sadness while hers held an intense look of guilt.

"I saw your post." You quietly spoke. "You actually got that tattoo for me?"

"Of course." She smiled. "I love you so much. I wanted to surprise you with it."

"Well, it was a surprise. It was the better part of my day."

Her smile faded and the guilt returned, more intense than ever before.

"I can't believe I missed it." She spoke in disbelief, slowly shaking her head. "I never miss things like this. It was so important to me. I always try and think that I'm a good girlfriend and I treat you the way you deserve to be treated but tonight, I realized that I just let you down. I missed your birthday party. What kind of girlfriend am I? What kind of girlfriend does that?"

"I missed you the entire time. I watched the door, hoping you'd come in. When everyone sang happy birthday to me, it didn't feel right because your arms weren't around me and you weren't singing the song in my ear like you would if you'd been there."

"I would've. I should've been here on your special day. I'm so sorry." She said, her eyes meeting yours once more. "I feel awful about it. I wish I could make it all up to you. I'm so disappointed in myself."

"It did hurt my feelings that you weren't here." You confessed. "But I know that you wouldn't intentionally not show up. I know you love me. I feel that every day."

"Y/N, I love you more than anything." She said as tears welled up in her eyes. "You're my entire world. I know I should've been here by your side today and I am so sorry that I wasn't. I swear it's never going to happen again."

"I know." You said and she sniffled.

"We're not breaking up, right?"

"What? No, Dove. No, of course we're not. I just needed time to think and time to mend my broken heart. I held everything inside while my friends were all here today. Don't get me wrong, I had fun with them and I felt very loved but it wasn't the same without you. So, I needed a little time to myself. Then I began to miss you and the bed got cold and I had too much on my mind."

"I know how you feel. We've got a nice sofa but it sucks to sleep on."

You chuckled and she couldn't help but smile.

That was a start, right?

"Dove, the last thing I want is to break up with you. That hasn't even crossed my mind, even as hurt as I was. Because I know you wouldn't just blow off or forget today. I know, if it were up to you, you would've been here."

"I would've and I will be next year, I swear." She said as she put her hand on your thigh. "Can I please make it up to you?"

"How so?"

"We'll have a belated birthday! Tomorrow can also be your birthday. Just the two of us, we'll celebrate by doing whatever you want. We can go anywhere, do anything. It doesn't matter. I don't care. I just want to make this right."

"I like the sound of that."

She smiled a little and brushed her fingers through your hair.

"You're my everything. You know I love you more than anything in this world, right?"

"I know. I love you too." You said and put your forehead against hers.

"So, get to thinking about how you want to spend tomorrow. I'll do anything you want."

"Okay. But only if you give me cuddles first."

"I'd be happy to." She grinned. "Let's go up to bed."

"No, let's stay here for right now. I'm not tired enough to sleep, I just want you to hold me." You said and she nodded before putting her arms around you.

"Happily."

You put your head on her chest and listened to her heartbeat, finding comfort in it.

"I won't ever let you down again. I promise." She said.

"I know, my love." You replied as you closed your eyes, looking forward to your make-up birthday with her by your side tomorrow.
