chapter twenty six:
"care to find out?"
———"Times up, and the week is over, Ren,".
The harsh sound of the wind blowing was the only thing that could be heard on the rooftop. Ren's euphoric expression fell into one of pure distraught. His hand slipped from her chin and traced down her body until body of his arms came to a resting place around her waist. Ren did the only thing he could think of: he pulled her closer by the waist. There was no space between the two of them. His head rested on her left shoulder.
Liliana could hear the boy's shaky breaths next to her. She patted his hair in an attempt to comfort him.
"Does the week have to end?," Ren asked in a voice that was barley above a whisper.
He never imagined that a week would pass by so quickly. Ren was practically scolding himself for not asking her to be with him for a month or a year at the very least. Lia gently pushed him away in order to make eye contact with him. For the first time in his life, Ren couldn't do it. He couldn't make eye contact with her because he knew what was going to happen and he wanted to avoid it as long as possible. So instead of looking at her eyes he chose to look behind her.
Unfortunately for Ren, Lia was smarter than him. She placed her hands on the sides of his head and gently guided him towards her until their foreheads were touching.
"Ren, you know a week can't go on forever. We just talked about this... isn't that why you asked to kiss me?"
"No? Yes? I don't know," Ren asked with confusion and sorrow laced in his voice. "It's just that this week has been great and I really like you Lia. I genuinely like you, a lot,".
Her breath hitched. Iridescent off-white coloured nails slightly dug into his scalp causing him to wince.
"Ren, you're a great guy," Lia tactically began. Instantly Ren groaned. That line was infamous for rejecting someone's confession. He tried to turn his head away from her but her hands kept his head in place. "You're handsome and sympathetic and you have the best conversation topics. Your smile is one of the prettiest ones I've seen. I think it's obvious that I like you too or else I wouldn't have let you kiss me," she whispered. Ren lit up at the last sentence.
"But..." she continued, "You asked me to be your rebound, Ren. I think you need to be absolutely sure that you no longer like Mira before trying to start a new relationship,".
"So you're not rejecting me?," Ren asked. Lia couldn't help but notice the small pout on his lips and the way his eyebrows curved in confusion. Laughter escaped her lips and echoed throughout the rooftop.
"I'm not rejecting you but I'm waiting for a bit until we figure it out," she said scanning his face. After a moment of comfortable silence the space between the two closed as Lia locked lips with Renrawin Aira for the second time that day.
Vincent was walking throughout the halls without a single thought in his head. He found himself in one of the stairwells that was rarely used by students or faculty. The room was dark and felt humid on his skin. Once he took a seat on one of the stairs that faced away from the small windows of the doors that led to the stairways, he took out a cigarette. Vinny played with the cig in his hands before eventually placing it on his lips and getting out a lighter.
"What are you doing?!"
Vinny leaned all the way backwards — with the cigarette still loosely hanging out of the corner of his mouth — to see the girl behind him on the stairs. He gave her a sheepish smile, "Hi Gorya,".
Gorya had an angry yet disappointed expression on her face as she walked down the stairs. She yanked the cigarette out of his mouth and tossed it on the floor before stomping on it with her shoes. Vincent's mouth hung open in surprise, "why would you do that?," he whined. "Cigarettes are bad for you Vincent! You're going to get cancer!," she said interrupting his protests.
"Vinny,".
"Huh?," Gorya asked after taking a seat next to him. "You called me Vincent but you can just say Vinny. I know my names a bit hard to pronounce here in Thailand, you don't have to force yourself. Plus, I think we know each other well enough,". This was the first time Gorya was able to properly look at Vinny, every other time they met there always seemed to be something more chaotic going on. She noticed the boy had freakishly long eyelashes that put any lash extensions to shame. His hair was the perfect mix between messy and styled. Gorya thought that his fluffy hair made him look more like a puppy than a human, especially when he smiled. The last thing she noticed was his lips. It was obvious that someone had carefully placed a lip tint on him as well as lip balm. By the looks at how moisturized his lips were, someone was doing it on a daily basis multiple times a day.
"I didn't take you as someone who would blatantly check me out like this," Vin teased. Gorya's cheeks began to heat up, "I wasn't checking you out!," she said in a flustered tone, "I was just thinking about how I didn't know you knew how to do makeup?". Vinny looked at her confusion prompting her to point at his lips, "you have lip tint on, right?".
Instinctively his hands reached to touch his lips, "yeah, Lia won't let me leave the house without it. She says I look dead without any colour on my lips,".
"Do you?"
"Do I what?"
"Do you look dead without it?," Gorya asked. Vincent laughed again. Perhaps it was the seclusion that the dark stairway that prompted this strange atmosphere or perhaps it was the fact that they were finally able to talk without anything else to interrupt them.
That would explain why Vinny chose to lean forward to the girl sitting next to him, a mischievous yet playful smirk was on his face.
"Care to find out?"
