Tommy woke up from an awful sleep. He had another nightmare. He always got nightmares. His body was shaking, cold from the slight breeze in the room hitting his sweat. He always hated waking up from nightmare. He rarely screamed when he woke up, which was lucky. He knew that the directors didn't like being woken, especially in the middle of the night.
All that he did was shake and have a cold sweat. It was still pretty awful, but not the worst.
He laid in bed for a while and was about to go back to sleep when the director of the orphanage, Ms. Smith, burst into his room.
"Get up child, you have a family who wants to see you." She said in a sharp tone. Tommy didn't like when she talked to him, and even worse, when she talked to him in that tone. It scared him, and he didn't know what she would do.
Tommy held back his groan and got up from his bed. Yay, a new family. He had gone to other families, but he ended up running away from them. He didn't want them to know his secret. In the world he lives in, people are given powers on their 10th birthdays. If that person was a hybrid, they wouldn't get a power. Tommy was a hybrid. He quickly got ready to meet the new family, making sure to strap his wings to his back. The hybrids could take two forms with their hybrid parts. There was their originally form, where the other parts are at their fullest and you could clearly recognize them as different. There was the second form, where they could 'minimize' their hybrid parts. It came in handy, especially since there were a lot of people who liked to 'collect' hybrids.
Tommy always keeps his wings minimized because he doesn't want people to know that he is an avian hybrid. Avian hybrids were on the rarer side of the spectrum and he doesn't want to become a decoration. Or someone's moneymaker, he didn't want to ne sold. The thought of someone trapping and selling him made Tommy sick to his stomach. He swallowed down those feelings and hurriedly went down the stairs and ate his breakfast. The eating area was large. It had cold lighting and it felt like the directors never put on the air conditioning. It was always too cold or too hot. He wasn't excited about meeting the new family, he was really nervous. Some of his past families did awful things to him, things that are certainly not legal.
The thought of the past things made his wings ache, or maybe that was just them being strapped against his back. Tommy didn't know.
From all of the stress of living this hell of an orphanage and moving from one awful home to another, he started plucking his feathers off of his wings. Unfortunate, he hasn't had the time to let his wings heal, so they have gaps in the plumage. Tommy felt a pang in his chest when he thought about his wings. He just wishes that he could live in a world where people treated him normally.
After breakfast, Ms. Smith put him in a room and told him to wait. The room was small, had a warm lighting, and had a few chairs scattered around. This room was made to look cozy, so the parents never suspected that the directors treated the children like shit. They must have had a designer do the room, because it was cozy. Tommy felt somewhat safe in this room, unlike the rest of the orphanage.
When Ms. Smith came back into the room, a man was following her. He had blond hair, long enough to go below his ears, and was wearing a bucket hat. The bucket hat had green and white stripes. He was wearing black robes with green accents on them. Tommy thought he looked a bit odd, but he didn't mind that.
The man walked over to a seat across from Tommy and sat down. He looked at Tommy with a warm smile and said, "Hello, my name is Philza, but you can call me Phil." His blue eyes stared at Tommy, and he felt nervous.
"Hi." Tommy mumbled out. He wasn't usually this quiet, but this man was strange and Tommy had to be cautious. He couldn't afford to let his guard down.
Ms. Smith handed Phil a folder with all of Tommy's information on it.
"Tomathy, right?" Tommy winced and nodded; he didn't like that name.
Ms. Smith said, "I'll leave you two be soon can get to know each other." The woman walked out of the room, leaving Tommy and Phil alone.
Phil looked at him, still smiling warmly. "Tell me about yourself."
"Ok, um, " Tommy's voice cracked and he cringed at himself, "my name is Tomathy, but... um, I don't really like that name so you can call me Tommy." He cleared his throat and continued speaking. "I just turned 15, my favorite color is red, and I like to draw."
Phil smiled. "I'm Phil, but of course you know that. I'm 35 and I have two sons, Techno and Wilbur. They both are 16.
Tommy thought that it was strange that Phil had two sons at his age, especially at that age. He guessed that they weren't blood related, probably fostered.
The two of them continued talking for a bit. Tommy was warming up to the man and he strangely felt safe around him. Eventually it was time for Phil to leave, and Tommy was a little bit sad that he was leaving. Hopefully he would see Phil again.
"Bye Tommy!" Phil called as he left the room. He was still smiling warmly, maybe even brighter after their conversation.
"Bye." Tommy called to Phil, waving his hand. Tommy was only a little bit suspicious of Phil. Most people seemed nice at first, of course they seemed nice. That's how they trick you. They got to make you let your guard down around them and then bang, you've fallen right into his trap.
Tommy left the room and looked at the clock. His stomach rumbled in hunger, and he realized that he and Phil had talked for hours. Tommy hurry and got a snack from the dining area and went up into his room. He drew in his sketchbook until it was time for dinner.
Tommy ate his food and went back up to his room to get ready to sleep. He went through his normal routine and got into his bed. He lay for a bit, his mind wandering and thinking about his day. Soon his eyes became heavy and he drifted off into sleep.
