James' POV
The man faced us. "I am Alfred Macnair. Surely you've heard of my brother, Walden."
"What was the deal with all those threatening messages, anyway?" Albus questioned.
Macnair raised his eyebrows at him. "Well, I had to get you here, didn't I?"
"Why?" Rose asked.
"That's what I was going to say," he said exasperatedly. "The Black Fog is a secret organisation dedicated to the taking down of pure-blood witches and wizards."
"Taking down?" I repeated. "What do you mean?"
"I mean exactly what I say," he replied. "The wiping out of pure-bloods."
"What in the- why on earth-?" Albus spluttered. "Why- how-?"
Rose and I were equally as perplexed.
"Pure bloods were the whole reason the Second Wizarding War happened," Macnair explained. "We don't want anything like that to happen again, so we're eliminating the very thing that caused it- pure blood wizards. And you three are going to join us."
"What makes you think we'll do that?" I demanded.
"Because there's no way you can't now," he said. "Now you know about this. If I let you go, you'll tell your dear parents, who'll alert the whole wizarding world. No, I'd rather the three of you keep this a secret."
"Like we're going to," Albus muttered to Rose.
Quicker than a flash, Macnair raised his wand and fired a spell at Albus before I could protect him. He fell to the ground, unconscious.
"What did you do?" I rounded on him, raising my own wand.
"I shot him with a tracking spell," he said. "This way, we'll know if you tell anyone. After we've done this to you both as well, you're free to go until you've made up your mind. So who's next?"
We couldn't cast another spell, or the Ministry of Magic would be after us. We couldn't run either, as there had to be enchantments surrounding the room. I looked at my cousin helplessly. She crossed her fingers and mouthed, "Lily."
I nodded, understanding. We just had to wait any minute for Lily to come, preferably with a million Aurors and Dementors. These people were downright evil.
I saw Albus stir a little and sighed in relief. Thank goodness it wasn't a serious spell. He just had to be careful now of what he said until we erased the tracking spell.
"Well?" Macnair said. "Who's next?"
"Why are you procrastinating so much?" Rose asked. "You had a bunch of time already."
Macnair scrunched his eyebrows in realization. "Oh, yeah. I could have done that." He shook his head. "But never mind. I'll choose you!" He pointed his wand at me, but I was ready. I jumped out of the way before the spell hit me. I ran over to Albus, ready to keep him safe, when I noticed something shiny in his pocket.
The mirror.
To hell with whatever tracking spell Macnair put on my brother. As he rounded on Rose, who grabbed a lamp on the desk to defend herself, I looked at the mirror and yelled, "HUGOOOO!"
Thankfully, the mirror shined and Hugo's face appeared. "Oh, hey, James! Wait. What the-"
"Call your parents! Now!"
"Whatever you say, bro," Hugo ran down his stairs and handed the mirror to Aunt Hermione. The handoff was shaky.
"James! I think we're safe!" Rose cried. She was still holding her lamp with both hands, and judging by the way Macnair was lying at her feet, unconscious, she had hit him on the head.
"Aunt Hermione!" I yelped at the mirror. "Gringotts Bank. There's a shed next to it. Can you come over with, I don't know, all the Aurors there are?"
Aunt Hermione looked startled. "Of-of course. But what-"
"We'll explain when you get here!" I said. "And come quickly, Macnair's stirring!" I said the last part to Rose, who quickly smacked him in the face.
"Macnair? We'll be right there," my aunt said.
We didn't have to wait long. In half a minute, we heard an enormous CRACK! as the Aurors arrived, right at the door. Albus, who had oriented himself, wobbled over to open the door, and in flooded forty men and women, along with my sister Lily, wearing matching uniforms and wands out.
"I was going to alert them when they Apparated right in front of me," Lily explained proudly.
"What are you three doing here? What's happened to Albus? Where are we?" Dad asked at the front of the crowd.
Rose and I quickly explained as some Aurors examined the evidence, took notes, and nodded to themselves. In no time, the people of the Black Fog were arrested, the whole headquarters was scraped, and Albus was spell-free.
"Why didn't you tell us sooner?" Uncle Ron demanded of Rose, while hauling a cursing Macnair away. "We- didn't want to disturb you," Rose explained. "This was our problem, so we would have to deal with it."
Uncle Ron smiled and ruffled her hair. "I'm not saying you're too young for that, Rosie. But if there's something you and your cousins can't handle, don't be afraid to confide in us from now on."
Albus, Rose and I nodded. "We understand," I said.
***
We were sitting on our sofa with Rose, Hugo and their parents. Hugo and Lily were swinging their legs on the sofa, trying to kick each other. "You could have just called me," Hugo kept saying. "I've learned some sweet ninja moves from YouTube."
"What-tube?" asked Dad, perplexed.
Hugo sighed. "It's a Muggle thing you adults won't understand."
"Well, this has been a crazy month, huh?" Rose said to me.
"Totally," I agreed. "Thanks to that mirror, though. If that weren't there, we wouldn't have survived."
"Yeah," said Albus. "2020 cannot be more eventful after this."
Just then, a head poked out of the fireplace. "Mister Potter, sir!" yelled the head. "We've got twenty or so Dark Wizards in London. Get your troop here!"
Albus slumped his head back on the sofa.
Dad and Uncle Ron looked at each other. "Well, I guess things would only get more hectic now," said Uncle Ron.
"I couldn't agree more," said Dad, and the two friends Apparated together.
