 Ten Years Prior

POV: Alpha Ryan

Ryan was scared and that was saying something. An alpha should never be afraid at least that was what he would tell himself but ever since his parents died, his sister Maddie was all he had, and he had just received a call from the hospital that she was in the ER. He drove as fast as he could and when he reached the hospital, he bolted inside, lunging at the desk. "Maddie. My sister. S-She's here?"

The nurse, an omega—figures—asked him to calm down and told him she was being seen by one of the ER doctors. Ryan snarled at her and began to pace. He didn't know what he would do if he lost his sister. She was all he had and yeah, they were young, him being fifteen and her being eleven but they were a family just the same.

An hour later, he was led to a room where his sister was hooked up to any number of machines and she was unconscious in an induced coma. He fell into the chair next to her bed and gently cradled her hand in his. She wouldn't wake up until almost two months later and when she did it took another two months for her to even remember him.

"Ry-Ry?" she rasped.

"Hey, Mads," he said, trying to hold back tears. "How are you feeling?"

"Tired but okay," she whispered. "I'm glad you're here big brother."

Ryan kissed her forehead and nodded as she fell asleep again. "Me too."

When Maddie was released from the hospital, Ryan was all too eager to take her home and get back to their lives, but things didn't go as smoothly as he hoped. For one, Maddie refused to tell him what had happened and when she finally did, all Ryan remembered was leaving the house after she was asleep and returning in a fugue state to wash off the blood. Nobody would miss the alpha prick anyways. He didn't tell Maddie what he'd done because he didn't want her to be afraid of him. She found out on her own and surprised Ryan by grinning ear to ear. They ordered pizza and had soda before diving into popcorn while they watched a movie.

"Hey Ry?" she said as she watched the movie.

"Hmm?"

"Were you nervous?"

"Nervous about what?" he asked but when she didn't elaborate, he turned to look at her. His almost twelve year old sister was never one to stay quiet and—Oh shit. Her twelfth birthday was soon. "You're nervous about your presentation?"

She nodded slowly and fiddled with her side braid. "Yeah. I'm pretty sure I'm an omega but I'm still scared. At least there's no big bad alpha to hurt me now."

Ryan put his arm around her shoulders and kissed her temple. "Nope. Just a big bad alpha brother to protect you from the bad ones."

Maddie giggled and curled into Ryan's side. They were happy and healthy, well until her birthday came with no presentation.

At first, they weren't worried because it was possible that she was just a late bloomer but soon a couple months had passed and then a year and still Maddie hadn't presented. The doctors had no answers for them, and Ryan was deeply concerned if not livid. His alpha instincts were on high alert, and he wanted to fix it but had no idea how. His sister was vulnerable and he rarely, if ever, left her side. He had graduated high school early which allowed him to look after her better and while he was working at the diner, she'd do her homework.
