Evelyn looked out her front window to see Chris pull into her driveway. She grabbed her bag, stepping out onto the porch as he approached.
"I don't get to see inside your house?"
Evelyn laughed, shaking her head, "not this time. Let's go." She motions to her car as he climbs into the passenger seat. "You should be used to being chauffeured around Master Evans."
Chris chuckled, "ha ha."
She saw him watching her as she drove to Mr. Hawkins's house. She pulled into the driveway, looking at him, "what?!"
Chris didn't say anything as he smiled, leaning towards her to kiss her softly. "Nothing."
She blushed slightly as she watched him get out of the car. "Okay then." She grabbed her bag, leading him inside. She set her bag down before going into his bedroom. "Good morning Mr. Hawkins!" She heard him grumble, making her chuckle softly to herself. "I'll make you breakfast. Let me know if you need help getting up." She found Chris sitting at the kitchen table as she started to make breakfast. She was almost done when she heard Mr. Hawkins come out into the living room.
Chris went into the living room to see Mr. Hawkins smile at him, "good morning!"
"Good morning young man. I see you're still around?"
Evelyn laughed as she set breakfast in front of him, "he is, for now." She heard him laugh as she took his blood pressure. "Little high." She set his medicine in front of him.
Mr. Hawkins smiled, "so can I ask again? Are you dating my Evie?"
Evelyn looked at Chris who looked at her for the answer, "maybe."
Chris laughed, "better than a no."
Once she was finished and cleaned up, Evelyn took Chris to a few more houses before getting back into the car. She sighed, "I have one more place I have to go. And it will be longer than the other ones. And I apologize in advance for whatever she may say or do."
Chris chuckled, shrugging as she drove, "okay?" He looked to she was genuinely nervous, "hey. It's okay. I'll be fine."
She groaned, pulling up next to the trailer, "but I might not be. This is where my mother lives."
Chris looked at the broken down trailer as Evelyn got out of the car. He followed her, grabbing her hand, "you don't need to be nervous. I'm not going anywhere."
She nodded, "we'll see." She sighed, opening the door to find her mom passed out on the couch. "Fuck!" She saw a half drank bottle of vodka next to her on the table. She kicked the couch only to hear her mother grunt. "Connie!" She looked at Chris, "can you make sure there isn't more alcohol hidden anywhere in the trailer?"
Chris nodded, "yeah of course."
She finally saw her mom start to stir, "are you trying to kill yourself?"
Connie scoffed, trying to sit up, "what do you care?"
"I don't." Evelyn helped her to her feet before taking her into the bathroom. She turned on the water in the shower as she helped her mom undress. She stepped into the shower, still obviously drunk as Evelyn groaned. After helping her get cleaned up, she went into the bedroom, coming back with some clothes. "Bedroom or living room?"
Connie grumbled, "living room."
"Fine." She helped Connie into the living room, passing Chris as they did.
Connie grinned at Chris, "who's this?! He's cute!"
Chris laughed, sitting on the coffee table after cleaning it off, "I'm Chris." He watched her lean forward, placing her hands on his thighs as he leapt to his feet, "okay."
Evelyn groaned, "I'm sorry. She's flirted with every guy I've brought home since I was 16."
Chris shook his head, pushing her towards the kitchen. He could tell she was frazzled as he wrapped his arms around her waist, "stop freaking out. I'm fine Evie." He brought a hand up to tuck a tendril of hair behind her ear, "okay?"
She nodded, "okay. Will you give her her medicine. She might take it from you."
He laughed, holding out his hand, "sure." He sat back on the table in front of Connie as Evelyn made her something to eat. He handed her the medicine and a water bottle, seeing her watch him as she took it.
She set the water bottle on the table, "who are you? You're far too attractive to be dating Evelyn.."
Chris shook his head, "nah. She far too attractive to be dating me." He looked up to see Evelyn blush. "Your daughter is amazing." He stood up again before she could touch him as Evelyn set food in front of her.
"I've confiscated all the liquor bottles. I dumped them in the sink."
Connie slammed her fork down on the plate, "fucking bitch."
Evelyn sighed, "you have liver cancer. Don't be stupid." She moved out of the way as Connie lunged for her, falling onto the ground. She sighed, trying to help her back onto the couch, but she pushed her away.
Chris helped Connie onto the couch as she grinned at him.
"Thank you young man."
Chris only nodded, pulling away before she could touch him, "you're welcome."
"You look familiar, have you attempted to date my daughter before?"
Chris shook his head as he crossed his arms, "no ma'am."
Connie scoffed, "oh well then. Not sure who would come back for more anyways."
Chris clenched his jaw as he heard Evelyn groan from the kitchen. "I think your daughter is great. She's smart and beautiful. And fun."
Connie laughed, "I'm sure she's loads of fun in the bedroom. Always been eager there."
"Hey! Don't talk about her like that!" Chris looked up to see Evelyn with tears welling as she pushed him towards the door.
"Just go. I'll be out in a few minutes."
Chris shook his head, "I don't mind staying."
"Please go, Chris."
He sighed, running his thumb across her cheek as he caught a stray tear, "I'll wait for you outside love."
Evelyn groaned, shutting the door, "why do you have to be such a bitch? I don't want you to scare this one away!"
Connie laughed, "he'll leave. They all do. No one wants you anymore Evelyn."
Evelyn didn't bother responding as she grabbed her bag, leaving the trailer to find Chris pacing in front of her car. He stopped when he heard her approaching, wrapping his arms around her as she sobbed. She groaned, pulling away as she wiped her face in her palms. She tossed her bag into the backseat of the car before looking back at Chris. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought you."
"I wanted to come Evie." He tried to grab her hand, but she pulled it away. "Evie."
"No. This was a bad idea. All of it."
Chris sighed, "no it isn't. I'm not going anywhere Evelyn." He grabbed her hand again, pulling her to him as he cupped her face in his hands, "I'm not going anywhere." He repeated it as she sobbed.
"But there's so much you don't know. Better to just walk away now Chris."
He laughed, moving his arms down to wrap around her waist, "I'm not going anywhere. Come over and I'll make you dinner and we can talk?"
Evelyn hesitated, but nodded, "really?"
He grinned, "of course. And let me drive." He heard her chuckle as she handed her keys to him before getting into the passenger seat.
