No, that can't be right. Did I hear him right? Did I clean my ears today? Or was it yesterday? Did I even clean them at—
"Carrie," Ashton repeated, "I'm gay."
Ashton looked at me with frustration and I just stared at him, not sure how to handle this groundbreaking news. I wasn't against the third sex or anything but I was completely shocked by his news. As far as I know, Ashton had been straight all his life. He's had three serious relationships and I've seen him kiss the heck out of those girls so I wasn't sure what to say at the moment. I was left speechless.
"Carrie?" he looked at me pleadingly. He probably thought I was going to reject him or something. His eyes searched mine carefully and I knew he was about to cry so I did the only thing I could think of. I threw myself at him and wrapped my arms around his neck.
"You're still my best friend," I whispered in his ear, "And besides, now I have someone to shop with."
Ashton let out a big puff of air and put his hands on my waist. "Thank you," he sighed in relief, "I was about to cry, you know? I thought you'd hate me or something." He buried his face on the crook of my neck and I smiled to myself, loving the feel of him being this close to me.
"Me? Hate you?" I pulled away to get a good look at him, "As if."
So that's how I found out my best friend's homosexual. It really wasn't a big deal to me, honestly. In fact, I was more than happy to have someone like him in my life. Of course, he had some rough patches along the way (like coming out to his family and to his friends) but it all took a right turn in the end. Ashton was perfectly happy with his life and I was happy for him too.
Well, that was until three months later...
