The Lonely Green Engine

In Italy, Thomas was working with Gina. They were collecting some cargo from Stefano to take to Mia at the next station.

"Ready, Thomas?"

"Ready, Gina."

The two engines steamed away. Mia was very grateful for the delivery.

"Thank you. You two make a good team," she said.

Thomas agreed. He liked working with Gina. She was a very good friend, but there were other reasons he liked her. Gina was green. Gina was small. And those things reminded Thomas of someone very special to him: his best friend, Percy.

"I wonder what Percy's up to now," he thought to himself.

Meanwhile, back on the Island of Sodor, Percy was standing by the Dockside, looking out to sea.

"I wish Thomas was back," he thought sadly.

"This is worse than when he was missing Gator," said Cranky.

"Who's Gator?" asked Carly.

"He was an engine who looked similar to an alligator," explained Big Mickey.

"He lives far away and when he went home, Percy missed him very much. But this is worse," said Porter, "Thomas is his best friend and nobody knows when he will return to Sodor."

Percy looked on sadly, but soon he had a flatbed of pipes to deliver to the foundry.

"Off you go, matey," said Salty kindly, "being Really Useful will clear your funnel for a while."

"Yes, Salty," peeped Percy as he chuffed away.

Percy puffed along to the foundry. His friends knew he was feeling sad.

Toby rang his bell to cheer him up, but Percy hardly noticed.

Edward tried to give him a friendly whistle in greeting, but Percy only gave back a low peep.

Even Gordon and his brother, the Flying Scotsman tried to offer Percy a headstart in a race to make him excited, but Percy just politely declined.

Percy soon arrived at the foundry. He delivered the pipes and went on his way.

But Percy didn't have much else to do and he decided to go back to the Docks.

"Oh, Thomas," he sighed, "where are you now?"

As Percy ran slowly by, Emily saw him and wished there was something she could do to help.

Later, Emily met Percy at the Docks. She saw him watching out for Thomas to return.

"Percy, I know you miss Thomas, but this moping around will never do."

"I feel so lonely without him, Emily," said Percy, with a tear in his eye.

"You're not alone, Percy," promised Emily, "we all miss Thomas. But we can only be Really Useful until he comes back. Why don't you use Annie and Clarabel for a while? I'm sure they would like to miss Thomas with you."

Percy considered.

"That's not such a bad idea," he peeped, "bye, Emily!"

"Goodbye, Percy!"

Emily sighed in satisfaction.

But Annie and Clarabel were so sad without Thomas, that they only made Percy feel miserable even more.

"I wish Thomas was pulling us," moaned Annie.

"Even if he does go too fast sometimes," groaned Clarabel.

"Even though he races Bertie all the time," added Annie.

"Even though he once lost my nice Guard," concluded Clarabel.

Percy sighed. He began thinking only of Thomas. He thought of how he warned Percy about going past danger signs, he thought of how he promised to bring the children home for him, and he thought of how Thomas let him take the Brass Band home from Great Waterton.

"I wish Thomas was with me too," he peeped unhappily to Annie and Clarabel.

At Elsbridge Junction, Percy's schedule joined with Bertie's.

"Are you okay, Percy?" he asked.

"Not really, Bertie," said Percy.

"Missing Thomas?"

"Very much."

"Well, I think I know a way to cheer you up," suggested Bertie, "do you want to race to the next station?"

"Race?" puffed Percy. "I've never raced you before, Bertie. I've raced Harold, but racing you was always something Thomas did. But...I'd like to have a try!"

"That's the spirit," revved Bertie, "first to Ffarquhar then!"

The whistle blew and Percy and Bertie rushed away.

Percy was so keen to win a race for Thomas that he forgot about missing him.

He was so keen that his excitement even affected Annie and Clarabel.

"Keep it up, Percy!" chanted Annie.

"Make Thomas proud and go faster!" cheered Clarabel.

So Percy did go faster. He whizzed along the line. The children in his coaches were very excited too.

"It's just like racing in Thomas," said Alice.

"Percy is fun to ride on!" declared Ray.

"He must be doing this to make Thomas proud of him! Go, go, Percy!" cheered Edwina.

At last, Percy pulled into Ffarquhar, just in time. He stopped just as Bertie came round the corner to come in second place.

"Hooray for Percy!" cheered the children.

"Phew! Well done, Percy," beeped Bertie, "you're a good racer!"

"Thank you, Bertie," peeped Percy happily, "your idea to race cheered me up very much. And now I have a fun story to tell Thomas for when he comes home."

Some time later, when Thomas did come back to Sodor, Percy told him about his race with Bertie at his first opportunity.

"That sounds amazing, Percy," huffed Thomas happily, "and now I have some stories for You!"

And Thomas told Percy of how he met Nia, then how he was reunited with Ashima, Yong Bao, Raul and Gina and of how he made many more friends and even of how he was rescued by an elephant.

"You had some fantastic adventures, Thomas," said Percy, "and now I don't feel as lonely."

"We have a new adventure to share, Percy," said Thomas, "let's race to Knapford Station!"

Percy happily agreed and they raced home like the best friends they would always be!
