Thomas was shunting at Knapford with his best friend, Percy. The two engines loved working together and often played games together, such as Hide and Peep or who could biff the most trucks.

The Fat Controller came to see them.

"Thomas, I need you to collect my finest suit from the Laundry Lady tomorrow morning then deliver it to Knapford. Then, I need you to chuff your hardest to Farmer Trotter's pig farm. He needs to take one of his pigs to see a vet on the Mainland."

"You mean, Thomas will be away tomorrow, sir?" asked Percy.

"Yes, Percy, but just for tomorrow. And you, Percy will be taking myself to Vicarstown for dinner with the Small Controller tomorrow."

"Yes, sir," peeped Percy.

"Looks like we both have exciting jobs to do tomorrow, Percy," whistled Thomas excitedly.

"But not together," sighed Percy.

"Don't worry, Percy, I'll be back before you know it, and besides, you'll have a great time having a special as important as taking the Fat Controller somewhere!"

Percy felt a little better for that.

When the two friends went to sleep at Tidmouth Sheds, Percy didn't rest well. He kept thinking of the time Thomas had left Sodor for a long time to go travelling around the world. He didn't want Thomas to go away that long again.

But there was nothing Percy could do to stop the plan. Unless...

The next morning, Percy had an idea to put to the Fat Controller.

(The Teacher and the Female Puppet Show Entertainer can be seen.)

"Please, sir, could I take the pig to the vet? Then Thomas can take you to Vicarstown!"

The Fat Controller shook his head gently.

"No, thank you, Percy," he said, "I've already decided who will do what jobs. And besides, Thomas is already on his way to collect my suit."

Percy was disappointed.

Thomas was in good spirits. He collected the suit from the Laundry Lady.

"There you go, Thomas," she said, "enjoy the rest of your day."

Thomas whistled cheerfully in response and puffed away.

(He passes Emily as he leaves the station.)

Percy was still feeling unhappy when Rebecca puffed in.

"Hello, Percy, you look sad."

"I just don't want Thomas to go to the Mainland again," sighed Percy.

"Why not?"

"I'm worried Thomas won't come back again. He was gone for a long time when he went around the world."

"I'm sure he won't be going all that way twice," said Rebecca, "once around the world should be more than enough."

Percy hoped Rebecca was right.

Thomas soon delivered the suit and was sent on his way to collect the poorly pig. But as he left, BoCo came into the station and spoke to the Fat Controller.

"Henry has broken down, sir. He can't take the heavy goods train to Bridlington."

"Oh, dear," said the Fat Controller.

Then he had an idea.

"BoCo, could you take the train for Henry, please? And can you also meet Thomas at Vicarstown? He'll have an extra truck for you."

The Fat Controller telephoned the Vicarstown Stationmaster to stop Thomas before he crossed the Bridge.

Thomas had collected the pig from Farmer Trotter.

"Take good care of him, Thomas," said Farmer Trotter.

"I will, sir," whistled Thomas as he puffed off.

But to Thomas' surprise, he was flagged down by the Vicarstown Stationmaster.

"Thomas, the Fat Controller wants you to stay here and BoCo is going to deliver the pig instead."

"Oh, okay, sir," said Thomas puzzledly.

BoCo soon arrived with Henry's goods train, and collected the pig.

"See you later, Thomas," said BoCo.

Thomas decided to wait for the Fat Controller to arrive on Percy, so that he could tell him what to do instead.

At that time, Percy came over with a coach to take the Fat Controller to Vicarstown.

"Full steam ahead, Percy," said the Fat Controller.

Percy steamed away. He normally would love to take someone as important as the Fat Controller, but today, all he could think about was losing Thomas again.

So it came as a surprise when Percy saw Thomas waiting at Vicarstown Station.

"Thomas, what are you doing here?" asked Percy.

"BoCo took the pig to the vet for me, but I don't know why."

"Because, Thomas, I have an important job for you to do here, and Percy too," explained the Fat Controller, "I need you both to go and rescue Henry. He broke down and there are no engines available to collect him in my timetable. So I need you two to fetch Henry, take him to the Steamworks, and then Percy, you can come back here to collect me and take me home."

The two best friends were delighted.

"Yes, sir!" they chanted together.

So, Thomas and Percy rushed off to find Henry.

Then together, they shunted him to the Steamworks.

(Victor can be seen just outside the building awaiting them.)

Then after that, Percy filled up with coal and rushed back to Vicarstown to bring the Fat Controller home, but not before whistling to Thomas.

Thomas puffed into Tidmouth Sheds, patiently staying up to wait for Percy to return.

Percy did so and was happy to see his friend.

"Hello, Thomas, you didn't need to wait up, I have to take the mail train."

"Why don't we split that job between us, like we used to?" suggested Thomas.

Percy was only too happy to accept the idea.

And for the rest of that night, Thomas and Percy enjoyed working together pulling the mail train.

And Percy now felt sure that Thomas would never leave the Island of Sodor to travel around the world again, at least not without his best friend!
