THE INSIDE OF THE EVENING TRAIN was silent. All the passengers sat quietly, either on their phones, observing, or simply taking a short nap.
Megumi Fushiguro sat in a corner seat, fighting the overwhelming urge to close his eyes. Sleep clouded his senses, his limbs ached too. The baseball coach was not merciful today.
He could've gotten a car ride home, of course, but he didn't want to call Gojo to go back to the school and pick him up. He knew that asking Gojo for anything came in a package deal with making a scene out of things. Plus, Megumi would never hear the end of it.
So the boy opted for the train.
Hues of orange and red-streaked the evening sky, blending with light shades of violet and pink. It was a pretty view, and he might have admired it if he wasn't so sleepy. He thought, if Kayo was here she would've snapped a picture of it.
His mind ventured to the plans for summer break. Megumi couldn't remember the last time he had gone to the beach, with his friends nonetheless. He remembered when they were children and Kayo would return from a trip with a small bottle of sand and seashells for both him and his step-sister.
Of course, the yearly beach trips ended abruptly when the Ijichis' parents passed away suddenly in a car wreck.
A lot of folks were surprised that a fresh college graduate like Kiyotaka took it upon himself to become Kayo's legal guardian after the death of their parents. But, hearing the news, Megumi wasn't too surprised to know Kiyotaka did that; the man was always looking out for his younger sister, and sometimes one would argue that Kiyotaka did so more than their parents did.
That's actually when Megumi and Kayo became close; both kids had lost their parents at such a young age. Childhood trauma brought people together he guessed.
The thought of a beach trip with his friends eased him. He was glad that first-years didn't have to attend the grueling baseball summer training camp. It would have been hell. A weekend in Okinawa...with none other than Yuji Itadori as well.
His cheeks flushed at the thought-- if they were staying a weekend...were they...going to stay at a hotel?
This is why he knew telling Gojo would be a semi-good idea; they would need his deep pockets to get a decent hotel and a reliable form of transportation. But he also knew that if Megumi asked Gojo, Gojo would sure as hell sign himself up as a "chaperone".
The train came to a lurching halt, and Megumi pulled himself up; it was his stop.
Megumi Fushiguro lived in a condominium apartment about a five-minute walk from the station. Who did he live with? With his legal guardian who was none other than Satoru Gojo himself.
