Sage was going to do it this time. She was going to confront Elijah on this sudden distance he'd forced between them. Somehow she felt she'd disappoint Corpse if she'd retract into her fears again. For he was right; friends don't just shy away from one another.

It though she'd spoken of the devil when a familiar head of light brown hair ducked out the exit of a lecture hall. Sage gulped the bile back down her throat. She'd never learned to hack confrontations, nor did she ever get into many.

But this was Elijah.

He caught a glance of her and began a different route — one she followed. And when even the sound of her calling his name didn't stop his tracks, Sage felt her heart just drop. She reached for his arm, halting him into place. "Hey!"

The strap of his bag fell to his elbow and Sage could see it add to his irritation — irritation bubbling from having to talk to her now.

The hurt in her eyes was unmistakable but so was the soft sigh he let out upon noticing it. She could suddenly tell this distance was just as painful for him as it was for her. And so, she cut straight to the point, "Why have you been avoiding me?"

She watched his eyes shift from corner to corner, all to avoid her catching the fact something was bothering him.

In that moment, Sage felt dumb. She knew her friend — he was the unfortunate type to close off than admit he was hurt.

And then her question changed in a small voice, "Did I do something wrong?" When he refused to speak still, she softly added, "You know you can tell me anything."

And then he shocked her with a high pitched voice he usually used to imitate her for fun, "Hey E, these are my friends Rae and Zombie. Rae and Zombie, this is Elijah... just Elijah. It's not like he's offered to help wash the period stains out my jacket or anything."

Sage felt too ashamed to even say anything when Elijah's face finally settled to reveal genuine disappointment.

He resorted to the strap on his elbow again while muttering something alone the lines of, "It's petty, I know, but it would've been nice to feel included."

"I'm sorry," she said. "I didn't realize how shitty that was of me until now..."

"Something about Zombie didn't sit right with me," said Elijah with a small shake of his head.

She huffed half-heartedly. "It's Corpse."

"Corpse, Zombie, Cadaver, I don't care. He's..." he trailed off. Elijah couldn't explain what it was about him he didn't quite like. All he knew was he didn't want this guy with boombox vocal cords near his best friend. And so, he said what could've only been the best way to put it, of course; "He's sus."

Sage found a childish smile pulling at her lips. "He's actually pretty sweet."

Elijah eyed her as one would a frothing dog. "Yeah, no. Call it guy instinct or whatever but I just know you don't wanna get involved with him."

She waved the topic to an end. "He's just a friend, E. Are we— um... are we cool now?"

To her utter delight, he rolled his eyes with his usual cheek. He came around to sling an arm over her shoulder and began leading the pair to their next lecture hall. "Yeah, yeah. You better make up for it by introducing me next as Elijah of the three G's: great, gorgeous and gracious."
