The ice cream was just what we needed as it turns out it seemed to not only put a smile on Audrey's face but also seemed to lift everyone's spirits and I felt happy to see Audrey smile. We got back as the lunch bell went and rushed off to the lunch hall we met up and sat with Jaz's roommates Jaz asked where I was in math and I told her it was complicated.
"Serah do they not know," I said in a low voice that only she could hear.
"Well Audrey hasn't exactly said it's okay to tell anyone but you are your dorm mates so I have kind of kept it to myself," Serah said.
"I guess that makes sense," I said.
"So did you get Audrey to agree to attend the funeral," Serah said.
"Yeah, she'll be there as will the rest of us," I said.
"Oh I was going with her whether she asked me to or not I'm not gonna stay behind while my girlfriend is in this state," Serah said.
"Hey, Abi if you keep whispering with Serah you'll miss this" Holly said as she pointed to a few tables behind us.
I see a girl that was no older than I was but she was on the lap of a teacher and kissing her the teacher looked to be around 25 I looked at the others for a reason of why I needed to see that.
"What," I said.
"Well look it's a teacher and a student kissing," Nova said.
"Yeah well after that announcement that the head made I felt like this would be happening more often I mean there are a lot of young hot teachers around here and according to Kagan the male teachers aren't too bad either," I said.
"I agree," Jess said.
"Says the asexual," I said.
"Whether I have sex, feel attraction or not doesn't mean I can't see why others would," Jess said.
"So what your saying is that you see why I fell in love with Nova," I said.
"Yes, and vice versa," Jess said and we all laughed.
"Yo Abigail," Richard said as he came up to us.
"Hey, Richard," I said looking up.
"Here," Richard said handing me a camera.
"Oh right you guys wanted a pic right, thanks but like I said no promise but I'll see what I can do," I said taking the camera.
"No worries the guys are the ones that really want the picture it just so happens that I was the one with the camera," Richard said.
The time leading up to the funeral at times would fly by and at others would feel like it was as if it wasn't moving at all the school had prepared a few cars for us and were now driving us to Audrey's home town. I was in the first car next to Nova in the back with Holly in the passenger seat next to Cat who came along as a teacher to help us and in the car behind us was Audrey with Serah and the head with another teacher.
"I hope I'm not out of line in asking but how is Audrey handling all of this" Cat said.
"A lot better than I did when I was in her position," I said.
"I thought you said your dad didn't like you," Nova said.
"So, at least he didn't hit me like my mum used to," I said.
"So I'm guessing your mum's new boyfriend isn't any better," Nova said.
"If I had to choose between my mum or her new boyfriend I would choose my dead dad over both of them without hesitation," I said and Nova gave me a hug.
"On a happier note, how are things with you two going," I asked Holly and Cat.
"What would you like to know," Cat said smiling at me in the rearview mirror.
"Have you slept together yet?" I said.
"N-n-no why would we," Cat said stuttering.
"Well Holly is definitely spending enough time at your place," I said.
"That doesn't mean she is sleeping with me," Cat said.
"Then do you at least plan to at some point," I said for the soul purpose of watching Cat squirm.
"What" Cat said after seeing the look Holly was giving her.
"Well do you want to sleep with me," Holly said.
"Yeah I do but I don't want to force you into anything," Cat said.
"I'm ready whenever you are," Holly said kissing Cat on the cheek as she drove.
We drove for a few more hours before pulling up to a church that had a lot of people outside all talking the doors were closed and it looked like the service hadn't started yet. We got out of the car and I straightened out my black dress and then took Nova's hand as we walked up to Serah and Audrey as they got out of the car and I could see that Audrey had been crying. I gave her a hug and the others all joined in for a group hug before the doors of the church were opened and we all filed in the pastor recognized Audrey and had us seated at the front as the family of the deceased. The service was similar to that of my dad the pastor said a few words about his life and all the God stuff then let others come up and if they wished they shared their memories of him. I was surprised to see that so many people came up but none of them were family I asked Serah if she knew why and she said that Audrey was the only family left.
As it turns out Audrey's mother had died during childbirth so for most of Audrey's life it was just her and her dad and things were good until Audrey told her dad about her liking girls and the problems began. I had heard enough so I told her I could tell where this was headed she nodded and we turned our attention back to the pastor who had now ended the service and was telling us to join him outside so her father could be buried. As her father was put into the ground I was watching Audrey the whole time and her face wasn't what I expected it didn't show any of the stages of grief it was just blank. I mean not like I have any room to talk I practically skipped the stages of grief altogether but still this is one of the points in the funeral that you start to feel it more than most. After he had been buried I was sitting with Audrey under a tree as we talked about how we were feeling and how I coped with my dad's passing before a woman came up to us.
"Hello my name is Sophie and you are Audrey correct," The woman said
Audrey just nodded and looked at her without knowing who she was.
"As I thought your father didn't tell you about me I'm your father's sister," The woman said.
