You did not really sleep well, but as a loud thunder cracks, you know, whatever time it is, your body will not let you go to sleep again.
Still being a bit drowsy, you jump out of bed, shivering as soon as you leave the warm comfort of your blanket. It seems like the rather chilly weather of yesterday got even colder with the new rain.
But that is all just a minor problem, as a simple warm shower will easily fix this, but as you try to flick on the light switch, you have to realize that there is maybe another problem that you have to face.
You try it a few times more, but as nothing happens every time, letting out a groan, standing there, one thing gets clear, you need a shower, or this damned feeling of still being half asleep will not go away.Still feeling cold to the bone, you make your way down the stairs, maybe it is just a problem in the upper floors, maybe you do not need to find warmer clothes somewhere, but as soon as you see Ahri sitting at the table, still in her blanket, you realize, it is not only the upper floor.
"Heyy, Y/N", Ahri tries to give you a somewhat tried smile,
"So, it is everywhere?", she nods,
"I only realized it once I already turned on the shower", it sounds like she is telling you a war memory,
and she certainly looks like that, wrapped up in her blanket, only her head and right arm poking out.
Maybe it just blew out a fuse, just switch it on, or get one out of the supply closet and everything is fine again, firing up the fireplace would be an option too, but you remember where grandpa kept it.
Out in the garden, besides the shed, in the open and you do not even have to look in the direction to know that there is no roof above, so that option falls flat too."I am going to look if something is wrong with the fuse box", you say as you turn around,
"And I am going with you!", the blanket with head proclaims proudly,
"Are you sure? I mean the cellar will not be any warmer than this, maybe even colder".
She seems to think about that for a time, really battling with herself, but she seems to have come to a conclusion.
"Just sitting around is boring, I will accompany you", she says proudly, as resisting the cold would be an honorable task. Something inside of you does not know, if that is good or bad, maybe she will be just like you, "helping" your father repairing the car. After grabbing two flashlights and making your way down into the basement, you both are engulfed in almost complete darkness. Neither the basement hallway nor the boiler room have windows and even with the rather dim cone of light the flashlights provide, you still feel a bit uncomfortable.
And it just gets worse as the light from the staircase expires as you enter the boiler room.
Without electricity, the room lays silent in the dark, as you both search for the fuse box, finding it with the bright light shining down from the staircase was much easier back then.
"Did you find it yet?", Ahri asks, you can almost hear her shiver, even with your back to her,
"Not yet, okay? I too just want to get some heat and light, this just sucks".
She does not answer, just a happy sounding shriek.
"Found it!", you turn, only to see her standing in front of a wall mounted cabinet.
"Do you know how a fuse box looks like?", you ask, she looks back to the cabinet, back to you, her ears slowly laying flat to her head."No?", she answers shyly, while ducking a bit, you do not want to let out that sigh, feeling understood of her,
"Let us just continue", you say, but as you turn back, the cone of your flashlight passes the grey box in question.
"There it is", you can finally let out that sigh of relief, as you do not have to rub your face along the wall anymore.
But as you try countless times to get back the electricity, you have to realize something a second time this day, that it will stay like this until something is fixed. As you stop flicking things on and off, you turn to face Ahri, she does not seem as enthusiastic as when you finally found it.
"Let me guess, it does not work?", she asks, you just shake your head.
"I think I will freeze to death" she mumbles more to herself than you,
"Are you not a fox?", you ask, her glance at you could easily kill you,
"Does that mean I am immune to cold temperatures?",
"Maybe more adapt?",
"I wish, but as you may realize, I feel like I am slowly freezing to death".
You both leave the cold boiler room and as you close the door, you can see how Ahri points towards the door on the opposite side of the hallway.
"Ohh, what is in there?", she asks, but as you want to answer, she already opened the door, looking into the room.
Many thoughts cross your mind, how will she even react to this, will she think your family is weird?
