(Y/N) POV
"No....please...no...please don't leave me...Conner...Martha...don't leave!" Cassy mumbles in her sleep.
I shake her awake and her eyes fall on me.
"They are gone," I say, I don't know what else to say.
"They may be gone, but you are not alone," I add as her brown eyes moisten.
"Thanks for waking me up," she says as I nod.
"Bad sleep is almost as bad as no sleep," I say as we suddenly hear a snap outside our tent.
I was first to move, I barrelled out of the tent and moved in the direction of the sound.
I didn't make it two feet before I saw the source.
Three kids were pushing through the wilderness. My sudden appearance made them freeze in place and their faces went pale.
We were consumed in silence as we stood each other up. Finally, a kid about 4 broke under the pressure.
"Mr! Please! Don't take us back! Please! No! Please don't take us back!" He repeated over and over again.
"Whoa, calm down, I ain't gonna do anything," I reason as Cassy appears by my side.
"Your...your not gonna?" The child asks
"No, I'm not," I say
"What are you three doing here?" Cassy asks as an older one, a girl, maybe 9 or so, moves forward.
"We will tell you, but you must promise that you won't send us back," she says
"We can promise," Cassy says
"I believe it's called a smuggling ring, kids are pitted against each other for the entertainment of others... it's under the face of an orphanage...while I guess that's true, the one who wins usually gets adopted by some sick bastard," the farthest one away says. They were too far away so I couldn't see them properly because of the darkness. But from their voice, I could tell it was an older kid, maybe a male teenager.
"So there are other kids?" Cassy asks
"Yeah...we escaped somehow but couldn't bring our friends," the middle kid says.
"What's your name?" Cassy asks
"Jacob," the kid who broke under pressure says
"Rebecca," the girl mutters
"James," the teenager says
"I have a question," I say
"Ok," James says
"Say...if these people who run the orphanage were to....disappear...would the orphanage be able to continue normally? Or would it revert back to what it is right now?" I ask as the kids are silent.
"It would change...Mother Rosie hates the smugglers...she can take care of us without them," James says as I nod
"Well, I'm afraid we are gonna have to break our promise," I say as Cassy looks at me with anger on her face.
"What do you mean!" She yells
"We are gonna take them back...but we are also gonna take care of these smugglers," I say as Cassy's anger fades.
The kids look at me doubtfully.
"Trust me, it'll be like frying cockroaches in a pan," I say as they continue their looks of doubt.
Finally, James breaks the silence
"Are you sure? They are pretty strong," he says as I nod
"I'm confident that I can take them," I say as even Cassy looks unsure.
"Only way to find out is to try," I say.
"But first things first...you kids need to rest, you look awfully tired," I say as I gesture toward the tent.
"You can sleep in there," I say as they look at each other.
"Are you sure?" They ask as I nod.
"As long as your fine sleeping with Cassy," I say as Cassy looks at me
"What about you!" She says
"These kids likely weren't very careful in their escape. I think we better have someone on watch Incase they are followed," I say as Cassy understands.
"In the tent, we will have an early morning tomorrow," I say as the kids slowly start funnelling into the tent.
Finally, I can see James in the darkness.
He was probably about 14, he was short for his age though.
"Thank you," he says as he passes me
"No problem," I mutter back as I hunker down for my long night.
Cassy POV
"There you can sleep in (Y/N)s bed," I tell James
"Sorry for inconveniencing you two," He says
"(Y/N) doesn't mind," I tell him as the other two enter the tent.
The youngest was Jacob, his eyes were visibly red and ready for sleep. His face was blushing when he turned to me.
"Miss....can I sleep with you," he asks as I go silent for a moment.
"It's just...I always get nightmares when I sleep alone," he continues.
"Jacob, you can't say that, you can sleep with me," Rebecca says.
"No, no, it's fine, we only have two sleeping bags, so you two should sleep with me anyway," I say as James starts talking
"Jacob can sleep with me," he says as the little boy blushes even more.
"But James is too hard, Cassy looks....soft," Jacob says. I'm not sure how to take that.
Is he calling me fat? I look down at my stomach, I wouldn't call myself fat.
"Please," Jacob says to me
"Of course, you both can sleep with me," I say as he does a cute little happy dance. Rebecca smiles and seems like she wants to copy him.
"We need sleep, so let's get some," James says as he sinks into (Y/N)s sleeping bag.
I curl up into mine, and Jacob and Rebecca follow.
Within minutes they all were fast asleep.
And it wasn't long after that, that both Rebecca and Jacob had their arms wrapped around me.
They looked so sound and peaceful.
"Momm," Jacob says with a smile on his face
"I've missed youuuu," he says as it fades to silence again.
This brought tears to my face. Do I remind him of his mom? What happened to her.
Thinking about it only made me sadder and sadder.
What did these kids face before coming here? What did they lose to get to this point?
Finally, I drifted into sleep.
