FLASHBACK

Sophomore year, January

Tate Woods

Me and Ro were at a library studying.

I really could care less about my grades or school, but Ro does, a lot.

I don't try in school because I usually don't need to. And Google's a thing.

She tries to try in school, but she usually ends up giving up and cheats off of me.

And I usually end up helping her with school stuff because I'm actually kinda good at it.

My dad, from a young age, made Syd, Nick, and me learn all sorts of things because someday we're going to "take over the business." My dad owns an industry, does stocks, and all that bullshit. He pretty much owns parts of different companies, and this stupid fuck expects us to do the same.

I doubt my sister is gonna do it. All she does is party and spend "daddy's money" on random shit.

It's her coping mechanism.

Nick, my older brother, is my dad's favorite because he always seems to do the right thing.

His coping mechanism is sports. He's usually out on a field playing soccer or football or whatever he's playing this time, but I know it's just an excuse to get away.

He's always out.

My coping mechanism is probably sleeping around with people and smoking.

And Ro. She helps me.

I just like it when she's around.

When I'm with her, it's like an escape from reality. She makes living and existing a little easier.

I don't know how she does it. She doesn't do anything yet, she does all the right things.

She's my safe place.

I only came to the library to get away from my house. To get away from my dad and all his bullshit.

I like the library actually. The smell of books, the peace and silence, and the overall atmosphere.

It's also quiet and there's not a lot of people.

People annoy the shit out of me.

Ro likes to go to the children's area to look at the books. I don't know why she loves children's books, but she does.

Especially the ones with the elephant and the pig, I think it has a pigeon too.

Ro was across from me. Her computer, a notebook, and textbooks opened across the table. She had her hair in a low ponytail, with little pieces in the front hanging down. She also had her headphones in, listening to music while she writes down notes, looking back and forth between her computer and the paper in front of her.

I had a textbook, and a notebook in front of me just to make it look like I was doing something. I was mostly on my phone the whole time, but then I got bored.

I zone out, and I stare at Ro without noticing. When I snap out of my daze, I realize that I was staring at her the whole time and it's really creepy so I look away before she notices.

I hope she didn't notice.

I look around, trying to find something else I could do.

Then something caught my eye.

Right next to a textbook of hers, was the book with the elephant and pig she took from the children's area.

I reach across the table and take it from her side, deciding to read it, wondering why she liked it so much.
