"What will we do?" Asked Kyro. He was deeply thinking of ways to solve our current dilemma . "What am I gonna do." Thinking of the solution I have in mind gave a painful sting in my chest.
"I'm stepping out."
We were sitting inside the silent car as he took my hand. "No, that won't be an option. We still have time to find a way. You never know they might reconsider." If I give my hopes to a tiny chance that they will reconsider, I'll only end up being more disappointed than before if they refuse us again. The future I pictured was our pack being together. Never did I imagine that the council would disapprove, and now I need to prepare myself for the most possible solution. "You know the possibilities are thin, that's why I'll begin the preparations and step down. I'll become your luna, I will help you with everything in the pack." The sting on my chest slowly rose up to my throat, giving me a lump that I try hard to hide. I don't want him to see or feel that I am hurt with what I decided to do. If he knew, he'll oppose it and leave his pack instead.
"I know how much you worked hard to have what you have now. All your life you trained and trained to become strong, you studied hard and achieved great feats. You love your job as much as you love your pack and I will not see you give it up." He placed his hands on my arms to look at me, his eyes pleading. "allow me to step dow-
"And let you leave someone else for the task? You know no one would be willing to step up. Don't forget that your pack is just as big as mine. Your responsibilities are not so small that you can give away." I answered quickly than I normally would. In my defense I am more reasonable to step down. I have someone in my pack who will be willing to shoulder the task of becoming an alpha, but with Kyro, he is the perfect leader in the eyes of his people. And if he steps down no one else would want to take over. He loves his job as well. If he steps down he'll be leaving his job to someone who is forced to do so and the people will be left with an alpha that isn't as perfect as him.
Quietly he let go of me and placed his hands on the wheel, driving fast in silence. I could feel that he was thinking hard. His mind was a mess as if it was pushing me away so that I couldn't read him. He is not angry with me, but I am certain he feels uneasy.
The days remained the same but also felt different. Oftentimes would Kyro be in his office answering phone calls after another while I prepare myself for the final decision I'm about to make.
Connor is fit to take after me. Although he's the gamma, he knows how to manage a pack more than Adrian. If not for their respect and brotherly love for each other, they would have been switched titles long before. Adrian is of course a good beta, but even he insists that Connor can do better. The only thing that held them back from switching titles is that they also respect their families and lineage.
The door opened suddenly that I slightly jumped in surprise. "I challenged the council." Kyro announced, a little too calm than he should be. My voice remained controlled, yet my mind definitely wasn't as calm. "You what? Why would you?"
"You know why. I know that you have always wanted the council to vanish or at least replaced."
"I do. But think of the impact. Our people would be affected in the process. That's why I've never done anything about them even when I badly wanted to go against them." I walked closer to him in a worried voice. "I don't mind if I get hurt, but it's the people's safety that I mind the most." To challenge the council would mean multiple trials will be held to question their credibility and if they are a fitting individual to still be a part of the council. If the accusations are proven to be true, then the accused and those involved with him are stripped of their membership and title by the United Nation's law.
"I will do my best to protect our packs. I would never challenge the council if it would bring harm to our homes." We both embraced each other, standing in the middle of the room and taking in the peace and quiet the silence brings. "It's been a while since we spent time together like this, should we forget everything else and just rest for the night?" I faced the window that showed the bright moon lighting up the busy people from outside. He nodded to his delight, and continued to watch the people do their business. Children were running around the street lights, while their unaware parents continue to use the shed post. It was shedding season, and Kyro's innovative idea resulted in shed posts being stationed around the territory. The fur collected will be left for the birds to use for building their nests. "You will always be someone I'm grateful for having." I told him as I adored the face of the man I would dedicate my entire life to.
