CHAPTER 38

AFRAID

Iris' POV

"Good job, girl! Nagustuhan ni Ms. A ang papers na sinubmit mo kanina."

"Kaya nga Iris. Bilib kami sa'yo. Intern ka pa lang pero ang dami mo ng ambag."

"No wonder you got accepted here. You're really smart."

"Thank you po." Nakangisi akong bumalik sa upuan ko at pinigilan ang sarili na magtatalon sa saya. I still couldn't believe that my life here would turn upside down. I thought my OJT days would be miserable but here I am now, getting praised for a job well done.

Nag-immediate resignation bigla ang dati kong supervisor, just in time sa pagbabalik ni Ms. A. I don't know what exactly happened but there are a lot of rumors going around the office. Apparently, hindi lang daw ako ang pinahihirapan nito.

They said the company gave her two choices, either leave on her own will or they'll fire her. Either way, I'm glad she left. Ngayon mas natututo na talaga ako. I don't run errands for Ms. A since she has her own secretary. What I mostly do is work on a few projects with the tenured employees. And just yesterday, we visited a site to have a full experience of being an engineering intern.

"Hey, hindi ka pa uuwi?" tanong ni Damian na umupo pa sa dulo ng table ko. He picked up a piece of paper and read the report out loud. I immediately grabbed it from his hands and rolled my eyes. Inilapag ko ulit iyon sa lamesa.

"Wag ka nga manggulo. Tatapusin ko pa itong pinapagawa ni Ms. A," I mumbled.

At first, I was really uncomfortable around him but as time passes by, unti-onti akong nasasanay na nakakausap siya at nakakasama araw-araw. He treats me like one of his friends and that helped me a lot to slowly forget our past. Though of course, it's hard to just throw it all away. May mga panahong naaalala ko pa rin ang mga nangyari noon.

"Una na kami, Iris, Damian!"

"See you both tomorrow!"

I just smiled and waved at our co-interns.

"Hindi ka pa ba sasabay sa kanila?" tanong ko nang mapansing hindi siya gumalaw sa pwesto niya. Naging kaibigan ko na rin kahit papaano ang mga kasabayan namin sa pago-OJT. Madalas magkakasama kaming apat nagme-merienda o 'di kaya bumababa papunta sa basement parking. I just couldn't go home with them today. Nagpa-adjust kasi ako ng working hours ko ngayon dahil may inasikaso pa ako sa school kanina.

"I'll wait for you," simpleng sagot niya. "What are you doing anyway?"

"Just polishing the layout for this restaurant. Pagod na nga kamay ko kaso kailangan na daw ito bukas. Iche-check pa nila Ma'am mamaya kaya dapat matapos ko na." Pinakita ko sa kanya ang nakalagay sa monitor ko. He gazed at it for a few seconds before he grabbed a chair nearby and pulled it towards my side. Tumabi siya sa akin at inagaw ang mouse at keyboard ko.

"Anong ginagawa mo? Hoy Damian, wag mong babuyin 'yan ah."

He chuckled. "Tinutulungan ka na nga, pagbibintangan mo pa 'ko. Why would I mess this up?"

I raised an eyebrow at him but I decided to just let him do what he wants. I watched him work on it silently.

"Done. Let's go." It only took him half an hour to complete what I was struggling to do earlier.
