Chapter 43: We Can Explain

Cara, feeling like she was in the fight of her life, snapped her full attention to Bruce. Steve and Bucky were also  looking at him now while Dr. Kimber started preparing to deliver the twins with the help of the two nurses on staff. Crying out through a contraction, each one becoming more painful than the last one, Bruce was talking loudly to himself about what he was seeing in the microscope and in the test tubes from the blood draw, as if Cara wasn't across the room sounding like a wounded animal. Everything hurt, she felt like she was on fire and could explode at any moment. She had never felt pain like this before.

"Dr. Banner do you want to share with the rest of us or should we start guessing?" Steve said frustrated.

He held tightly to Cara's hand as well as stroked her hair, looking at her helplessly. He wished he could take even an ounce of her pain away, he'd take all of it if he could. He had never seen her like this before, but Bucky had, in a way. Holding Cara's other hand firmly, his eyes were glazed over in an unfocused stare watching her scream. His mind flashing back to the day they thought Steve had died, her screams now were so eerily similar to her screams that day, remembering all the pain she had gone through for so long. Most of all he remembered how helpless he had felt.

"Sorry! It's incredible- by science standards. The fact that it's actually you three is moderately horrifying but-" Bruce started to ramble.

"JUST FUCKING GET TO THE POINT." Cara yelled out heaving breathes afterward.

Machines started beeping as Cara's eyes began to flutter, rolling back into her head briefly before regaining herself a moment before it happened again. Without a word the nurses put a cannula in her nose, carefully tucking it behind her ears and turned on the oxygen. With a tiny hiss and a few moments later her eyes fluttered open completely normal again. Steve now starting to panic, quickly turned to Bruce who had turned for a moment to see what was happening to Cara as well as at her outburst. He was in a dead stare in Cara's direction, and he looked like he could be sick at any moment but couldn't look away.

"Dr. Banner please inform them of your discovery so I can get these babies out of her? She's almost to full dilation and these boys aren't waiting." Dr. Kimber said annoyed.

"Yeah I can see that." Bruce said rubbing his face as he turned away.

Cara groaned realizing what he had been looking at in such a sickened trance.

"According to the samples, my hypothesis was correct that the formulas are very different, they resist each other until one consumes the other. The same is evident between Cara's sample and Bucky's sample even though they both had a Hydra formula but not as extreme an
aversion as to Caps blood. Their samples are more cohesive." Bruce said.

"I'm sorry, I'm not sure I'm understanding." Steve said shaking his head from side to side slightly.

"That means her body will have the most trouble with the more aversive cells." Bruce said.

His face changed suddenly realizing, Steve still confused, Cara looked at Bucky who was staring blankly at her, clearly hurt though he was trying to hide it. Steve looked around at Bucky and then Cara and then Bruce.

"What do you mean?" Steve asked.

"It means," Bucky said interrupting, "that because Cara is having so much trouble, the babies are most likely yours Steve. Congrats."

After his deadpan statement Bucky immediately got up excusing himself before he left the room. Clearly distraught Cara began to breath even harder looking at Steve and grabbing onto his hand that was already holding hers in a panic.

"Steve-" Cara said panicked.

"I know I know I'll go get him." Steve said starting to get up.

Cara held him so tightly he stopped, causing him to look down at her.
