days turned into weeks. taehyung and jeongguk had gotten a lot closer over time. they'd go on small dates, share little kisses sneakily.
overall, it was going well. taehyung was planning to pop the question. he had realised he likes jeongguk a lot. instead of joking over being together, taehyung wanted it to be real.
and so, he found himself waiting for jeongguk in the restaurant they were going to have their date at.
but jeongguk seemed to be late. about half an hour passed but the younger didn't arrive. frowning as his calls were left unattended, he was startled when a flower bouquet was popped in front of his face.
he flinched back, looking up to be met by jeongguk. "hi! sorry i'm late." he grinned sheepishly.
taehyung gently grabbed the bouquet and kept it on his lap as he gestured for jeongguk to take a seat.
"why didn't you answer my call?" taehyung asked impatiently. "i was worrie-"
"i lost my mobile." jeongguk sighed. "we all went out to the beach earlier but i dropped my mobile somewhere. and i haven't got it back yet."
"what are you gonna do now?"
"i don't know. i didn't have much photos in my mobile but it still had so many memories. and it just disappeared.." he was really upset about the whole thing.
"are you going to buy a new one?"
"yeah, im planning to. but not anytime soon." he said quietly.
"by the way, is there anything you wanted to say? you called me out of the blue."
"yeah, i did," taehyung gently grabbed his hand gently. "i ordered your favourite for you. let's talk over food, okay?"
"okay...? you seem nervous, what's wrong?"
"it's nothing."
"okay- and oh! i wanted to tell you." jeongguk sighed, his mood dropping just like his smile.
"what?"
"i'm going back tomorrow." he said slowly and quietly. taehyung froze.
"...what?"
"i know, i'm so sorry i didn't tell you earlier. it's just that i lost my phone so I couldn't tell you. and it completely slipped my mind."
"then what about us?" taehyung asked, voice coming out as a whisper. jeongguk's hand went stiff in his hold and he hung his head low.
"i don't know." he whispered. they went silent for a moment before jeongguk spoke up again. "you'll be there, right? to see me off?"
his heart sank when taehyung kept quiet and he gulped, nodding to himself as he pulled his hand away from taehyung's. taehyung grabbed it again, tighter than earlier, almost as if he was afraid to let go.
"gguk? are you really giving up now?" taehyung asked, voice wavering.
"i don't have a choice," jeongguk squeezed his eyes shut, ducking his head down when the waitress arrived with their food. she kept down their food and wished them a happy meal before going back.
"we can't even get back together when i'm there?" taehyung asked.
"i don't know." jeongguk shook his head, tears rising to his eyes. "really."
taehyung sighed. "have some food." he said, tapping jeongguk's plate. "i'll just use the restroom once." he stood up in a hurry and kept his bouquet on his seat before rushing towards the restroom.
while standing up, a paper slipped from the pocket of his coat and jeongguk picked it up. he hesitantly opened it, seeing taehyung's beautiful handwriting splayed across in black ink all over the paper.
on the top, 'don't be a coward!' was written in bold letters and under it was a speech. about jeongguk?
jeongguk gasped. taehyung had written down everything about him in the page, from his little habits to his endearing manners, everything was presented on the sheet of paper. at the end, in bold letters again, was written - 'just propose him!'
"what the-" he crumbled the paper when he saw taehyung coming back. he put the paper in his pocket and continued with his food, heart heavy. he couldn't meet taehyung's eyes after that. he'd known that the older cried back there, judging by how his eyes were rimmed by red.
"what did you want to tell me?" jeongguk asked suddenly.
taehyung looked up from his food with wide eyes. "pardon?"
"you told me you wanted to say something." jeongguk said. "that's why im here...?"
"oh, about that," taehyung laughed nervously. "it's nothing. it was just an excuse to spend more time with you."
"are you sure?"
"yeah. good thing, right? atleast you told me you'd go tomorrow. imagine if i went to your hotel just to find you gone?" he said monotonously, dry humor lacing his voice.
jeongguk sighed. "im done." he pushed his plate away and wiped his mouth with a paper napkin. grabbing his wine glass, he bought it up to his lips, tasting the liquid, nose scrunching up.
his throat burnt from the lump inside it and the wine just made it worse. he put down his glass and decided to look around the restaurant while taehyung struggled to finish his wine, not really appreciating the taste it offered.
they split the bill and paid for their dinner before leaving the restaurant. the flower bouquet sat prettily against taehyung's ribs as they walked around mindlessly.
"tae?" jeongguk called out. taehyung kept quiet. "..are you mad?" he asked quietly.
taehyung didn't answer, making him sigh once again.
"let's at least enjoy until i'm here, please?" he pushed taehyung into a corner, caging him between the wall and him.
taehyung looked down at his feet, jaw clenched as he stiffly nodded. jeongguk took a step back and let taehyung compose himself before he was finally able to face jeongguk, shoulders tense and caved inwards.
his breathing was labored and there were tears surfacing his eyes. his bottom lip was caught in between his pearl white teeth, fondling the flesh to ease his nerves.
"what's wrong?" jeongguk furrowed his brows. "taehyung-"
"s-see you." taehyung managed to let out through his labored breathing and he turned around, quickly sprinting off. he stopped a cab and got in, leaving the place as soon as possible.
jeongguk remained frozen on his spot.
