𝑺𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒖𝒏𝒆𝒙𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒅𝒆𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆, a lot of things didn't go as planned. The icing on the cake: the prototype they were all conceiving for months turned out to be unsuccessful.

Charlie decided to exceptionally take the rest of her day off. Well, 'taking a day off' in the Stark family rather meant the occasion to work from home, the phone constantly stuck to her ear. She would do so even if Bruce and the rest of the team assured her everything will be fine on that Friday afternoon and that they will see her on Monday morning, all cheered up.

Barely in the car to the way home, Charlie was already dialing phone numbers. When James parked the car in front of her townhouse, she had already finished her first phone call and was already speaking to someone else.

Her bodyguard opened the door, and she barely gave him a glance when she went out of the car. Charlie could feel his heavy gaze following her when she walked before him, making her heart racing for no reason. James quickly followed her and checked her house first as usual, before she dismissed him.

"I'll be staying here for the rest of the day so you can go home-" Charlie said while covering the mouthpiece of the phone with her hand and then turned back to her original conversation. "Hey, Bruce. Sorry, me again-" She didn't wait for James Barnes' answer as she slammed the front door to his face and headed to her office.

Some urgent calls and meetings later, she felt the emotional exhaustion she hidden deep those past few weeks coming again to the fore. Her face buried in her hands and her slim fingers through her dark thick hair, she let a long sigh escape in desperation. Her work, which she loved and for which she had never counted the hours she worked to finally see her project come to life, wouldn't allow her to clear her head. Straightening on her chair, the sun warmed her cheek. The sudden feeling of wanting to go outside invaded Charlie. One thing bothered her, though.

The bodyguard assigned to her by her father.

She wanted to do whatever she liked without being followed by James. By dismissing him earlier she got rid of him, at least for today, assuming he really left. For greater caution and in case he was still watching her from his car like he used to, she took the backdoor and got out once she changed into her sportswear, a deep brown matching bra and leggings.

The sun was still rather high in the sky when she left, the fall starting to take residence for the season, as the leafs were turning shades of gold, burnt orange and crimson red.

Warming up her limbs until Central Park, she started running once she got to one of the entries. Treading the ground carpeted of burnt orange leaves thought it would cheer her up a little. Running was something Charlie usually did to clear her mind from her hassles. She started to do it in high school, when her and her father still lived in Malibu, California. She followed the coast, emptying her mind as the miles went by and fulling it with sea breeze and paradisiac landscapes instead.
