Mostly because today was an important day - she pretexted a meeting with her team last night to get home early -, but also because when she woke up in the middle of the night, she found the other side of the bed cold and empty.

Charlie was so exhausted after a third round last night that she closed her eyes and fell asleep immediately after. James must have left at that moment.

It was his monthly two-day off anyway, so she wouldn't have to deal with the awkwardness of looking at him in the eye like nothing happened after he gave her three mind-blowing orgasms.

Not that she hadn't experienced that kind of things - sex with Steve had been great. Really great, even, before he stopped paying attention to her. But it was just... different.

Was James regretting what they did?

Was she?

It wasn't like it was the best sex she ever had with the sexiest man she had ever seen.

Like, really, no big deal.

And even if it was, it wasn't like they had agreed to something more than just sex.

Like cuddles in bed and cooking breakfast half-naked the next morning.

Charlie sighed.

Was she really expecting that? Yes. No. Maybe.

She knew it was childish and absurd to hope, because he was her bodyguard, and she was her. She was talkative, when he was the silent one. She was infuriating, and he was impatient. She was trying the best she could to get under his skin, while he was the one enjoying punishing her for it.

She was in danger, he was here to protect her.

Wherever you are, I want to be there, too.

You're more than I could ever dreamed of.

You feel so good.

All bullshit.

But she shouldn't have felt what she felt right now and she hated that tightening ache in her chest. There was no room for that kind of feeling in her heart anymore.

Stretched out on the bed and looking out on the ceiling, she eventually snoozed her alarm clock before checking the date on her phone, just to be sure.

December 16th.

And she didn't fail to notice that there wasn't a text from him, either.

He literally bailed like she was a one-time stand he would never see again.
