When they arrived, someone opened the car door for her and the bare skin of her leg showed up through the split of her long dress when she put her foot down to the ground. Then, she looked up to the valet who usually opened the door to thank him. Her relief was short-lived.

"Are you kidding me?" she asked Steve after she went off the car. "What is he doing here?"

"Your memory is short, Miss Stark," James answered rather sarcastically and slammed the door shut.

"My memory is perfectly fine, thank you very much," she said, now facing him.

"Then stop asking that damn question when you already know the answer."

"Steve is with me tonight, I'll be okay."

"Something could come up and you could end up alone," lightly tilting his head to one side, James switched the direction of his gaze from Charlie to Steve, who was waiting on the other side of the car. "It wouldn't be the first time it happened, right?"

A muscle tightened in Steve's jaw but he said nothing.

"You do have an answer to everything, don't you?" she rested her hands on her hips, chin up.

"Maybe," he finally redirected his eyes on her and a smirk appeared. As hypnotized by it, Charlie didn't look away. She couldn't. James bent closer and whispered to her, "Your Prince Charming is waiting for you."

She didn't say anything more as she joined Steve and together they walked inside the restaurant. The Maitre d'Hotel accompanied them to their favorite table and their waiter already brought their bottle of wine and the martini that Charlie used to drink every time the couple came over.

"Is he going to stay the whole night watching us like that?" she nervously scanned the room, looking away from James' heavy blue stare that gave her chills along her spine. He wasn't really subtle fainting to mind his own business.

"Probably, yes," Steve answered softly, unfolding the elegant white napkin and putting it on his lap.

The restaurant was intimate with dim lights, red velvet seats and a soft background music, but with her bodyguard's presence only a few tables away, it was really hard for Charlie to focus on her boyfriend and the great evening ahead. "Don't imagine I'm going forget that you're a part of this. Because I won't."

"What's the problem, Charlie?"

"The problem, Steve," she spoke louder than she intended and a few heads turned in their direction. They never fought and never yelled at each other so the tone of her voice surprised her. Licking her bottom lip, Charlie took a deep breath, desperately trying to calm her nerves. "The problem is that you and my father decided by yourselves."
