They never left, they both sat on her apartment couch staring at the door. She shook her head and when she spotted the old man pull up she smiled and turned to the boys. "Would you go down and help him up the stairs he has a bad knee, and he always brings presents for the kids."
She didn't even get t finish the sentance before they were both out of the door, she giggled, imagining their faces when they relised that her close friend happened to be a wry almost sixty year old man who was more of a grandfather forher than anything else. "God their faces must be priceless." She giggles some more before pouring some iced tea for him. She thought the stuff was nasty, it was the lays really bad iced tea like what you would get at a corner store on tap. However old man Barney loved it, said it reminded him of his mother and hot days so she always had a few bags on hand when he dicided to drop by.
Barney was a thin wriry man except for his stomauch which had extended with his fast food diet. He'd lost his wife almost fifteen years ago, he once told Ash that she was the love of his life and now he was just waiting to hold her again, he sold the house and everything he owned bought a motercycle after not owning one for almost forty years due to his wifes complaints and after giving the rest of the money to his only son he just drove. He's been driving for fifteen years, helping out where he can getting into as much trouble as he can, his hope is to go out riding. He once got into a bad accident breaking both his legs and fracturing his hip, he woke up and started swearing up a storm that the doctors hadn't let him die. He checked out and got right back on his bike.
"Hey!!! How's my little fire going?" A thin pair of arms surrounded me as she laughed and hugged him back.
"Berney, how are you, still riding that old harley i see, you know you could get it fixed up and sell it, settle down, in town here with me."
He mock glared at her, "Why the hell would i do that, I dont want to be stuck here like you."
She punched him, "Hey, i like my life, besides boring is safe, mmm."
"Yeah, and safe has always been your motto huh," He winked at her.
Rolling her eyes she turned to the twins, "Just put his sadle bags over by the table, thanks I apreciate your help he tends to want to do everything on his own without thinking about the fact that he has a bad hip and could fall and break his neck." She gave Berney a look.
He lifted his hands in a 'I'm to old to get told what to do look.' "I've been waiting to die for fifteen years fate ain't going to let me die going up the stairs, it's to ironic for her."
Ash placed a kiss on his wrinkled cheek before placing his tea in front of his on the table. "I'll go get the target and a few knives ok?" She walked to the back stairs that led down to just outside her office, she turned to the twins, "Be nice, he's almost twice your age and deserves your repect."
When she came back up with an old tattered target and four knives, Arrow and Colbalt were sitting enraptured by one of Berney's stories from when we first met. "I could have sworn he was going to shoot me, i was looking forward to it, and then this little woman gets right in front of the gun and starts lecturing the bank robber about how one should respect our elders and how rude it was to point a gun at me." He was laughing, "She stood their, this little short thing glaring at this towering man hlding a semi-automatic with one hand and a grenade in the other. She lectured him until swat came and took him, them she turned to me and started berating me about how i shouldn't want to die so readily."
"Hey now, i wasn't that short and you should have been more careful about just taking death. You might have a death wish but some people don't want you to leave us. Mmmm, your wife can wait." I handed him a black one half inch throwing knife. I gave one to each of the brothers to.
"My wife's been waiting for almost sixteen years, she's bound to kill me again once i get up their for taking so long." He tossed the knife at the target hitting the third ring down.
Both boys threw theirs at the same time hitting around the same place if not a little closer to the bullseye than Berney, Ash didn't even look up from putting the steak in the oven before throwing hers, her mind having already calculated and decided how to throw the knife. When she came back to the table she smirked as the knife hit the bullseye. Berney murmed to himself about little girls and their knives. While Colbalt just stared at here and Arrow frowned at the target.
The night continued much like that as she set out the food adn they ate. It was after dinner when they all sat down in her tin living room when the twins started asking questions about how Berney knew Ash.
"So you guys met when you were both being robbed at a bank? How did you guys keep in touch?"
Berney glanced at Ash and she blinked once at him. "She worked at a mechanic for me, i had her do a few jobs for me. She also did a few ink work on my arms." He showed them his wife's face that she'd put on his upper chest right over his heart. It was a sweet thought but a little akward but a few days before she'd had to tatoo a pair of breasts onto a guys ass.
"I didn't know you were a mechanic." Arrow looked accusingly at Ash.
"You guys haven't even taken me on a date, as cliche as this sounds you don't know a third of about me."
"Not from lack of trying." He murmured. She glanced sideways at him, 'what the hell did that mean?'
