ACT I — CHAPTER XXI

After joining the rest of her family, Lydia Spellman spent the next twenty minutes making sure that the mortals of Greendale were gathered in the basement of Baxter High. Once it seemed that the halls were empty, the Spellman family took one more walkthrough of the school to make sure no one was left behind. Lydia also had an ulterior motive, which was finding Susie, Sabrina, and Roz, none of which she had seen since the first two left.
As they finished checking the school, Sabrina finally came running down the hallway.
"Sabrina, where have you been?" Zelda asked, as the rest of the Spellmans all went to meet her, "The mortals are down in the shelter, and it's almost the Witching Hour!"
They all stopped in front of the main entrance to the school, as Lydia looked past Sabrina for any sign of Susie or Roz.
"I went to Harvey's, and then I went to the nursing home, and then I had to make a detour to call in a favor," Sabrina explained.
"A favor? Of whom?" Zelda questioned.
"Did you see Susie on your way back?" Lydia asked.
"I realized coming from Harvey's that I hadn't seen Roz's grandma, and that she and Roz were probably at the nursing home and Susie would have gone there. Roz's grandma wasn't leaving, and Roz and Susie wouldn't leave her — Susie said she was sorry about breaking her promise, Lydia. Anyways, I made a call to the Academy and asked Nicholas Scratch to look after Harvey and for Thomas Loher to look after Roz and Susie," Sabrina blurted out.
Lydia's eyes widened, "You had Thomas go to Susie?"
That was a nightmare scenario: the boy who liked her with the girl that she had just kissed.
Sabrina was about to answer when Zelda cut her off, "It doesn't matter, your friends are safe. Now, the Witching Hour is in two minutes, so everyone gather around."
The Spellmans all formed a circle on the crest of Baxter High in the school's entryway, holding each other's hands. Lydia stood in between Sabrina and Ambrose, looking back and forth between her aunts.
"Do we all remember the spell?" Hilda asked, and they nodded.
"We have to be focused, or else the spell could falter," Zelda reminded them. Once again, they all nodded.
Their gazes all shifted to the clock, with thirty seconds until midnight. Lydia bit her lip. She became very aware of her breathing as her stomach dropped and her heart felt like it was beating out of her chest.
With two seconds until midnight, the Spellmans all turned from the clock, tilting their heads downwards and closing their eyes. They began to recite the spell.
"Qui affecto protego,
Mixtisque iubas serpentibus
Et posteris mei stirpiqu."The doors to the school began rattling, and Lydia could hear the wind picking up outside. She tried her best to keep her mind focused on the spell, but she couldn't help but think of Susie. Now, she couldn't help but be grateful that Thomas was protecting her.
