The room was silent, the only sound being heard was the fire crackling. The five Spellmans looked at Father Blackwood, each waiting for him to speak. Just as she had about Ms. Wardwell, Lydia had a bad feeling about Father Blackwood — something just seemed off about him.
"Now," Father Blackwood finally began, "your aunt𝐬 tell me you two have questions about your Baptisms and such."
"We do," Sabrina answered for the both of them.
"I don't think we're sure where to begin, though," Lydia added.
"Allow me," Father Blackwood said. He sat up straighter in his seat
"A witch's Dark Baptism is our most sacred unholy sacrament. The oldest of our rites. We've been performing them for centuries," he said, "Our Dark Lord's book, the Book of the Beast, is the most ancient one in existence —"
"About that," Sabrina cut in, "if we sign our names in the Book of the Beast, does that mean we're giving the Dark Lord dominion over our souls?"
"That's one interpretation, but it's largely a symbolic gesture, as rituals in most religions are," Father Blackwood answered, "What else?"
"If Sabrina and I sign our names in his book, doesn't that mean he can call on us? Whenever he wants? To do his biddings and stuff?" Lydia asked.
"All religions demand some sacrifice. but signing your name is more like," Father Blackwood paused for a moment, "a pledge, let's say. That you'll abide by his commandments. Do the two of you know your thirteen commandments?"
"We've taught them to them," Zelda answered for the twins.
"They've learned them by heart," Hilda added.
"We're not evil people, Father," Sabrina said, with Lydia silently nodding along.
Father Blackwood was silent for a moment before bursting into laughter, with Hilda and Zelda following his lead.
"I'm glad to hear it. Neither am I. Neither are your aunts," he told them.
"But the Devil," Sabrina started.
Lydia soon realized that that was not the right thing to say on Sabrina's hand. The smiles on their aunts' faces disappeared and Father Blackwood gave Sabrina a hardened look.
"The Dark Lord, yes?" he questioned.
"He is the embodiment of evil," Sabrina said.
"Incorrect," Father Blackwood hastily answered, "He is the embodiment of free will. Good, evil — those words matter to the False God, but the Dark Lord is beyond such precepts."
"What about Hell?" Lydia asked. "I don't want to go to Hell when I die."
"First of all, if you accept the Dark Lord's gifts, you won't die, not for a very long time. Second of all, Hell is for mortals. In exchange for their service and devotion, witches are exempt from the eternal flames of damnation," Father Blackwood explained, "Really, what's needed here is a fundamental shift in thinking —"
